NXL Europe Spain 2020 - Postponed to October 8-11 due to Coronavirus uncertainty

The Euro NXL event scheduled to take place in Gandia, Spain in April 2020 has been postponed, due to concerns over the Conavirus.

The season will now open with the Prague event in May.

"After careful consideration and several days of monitoring the evolving international travel restrictions and advisories in many countries, the NXL has taken the precautionary decision to postpone indefinitely the NXL Europe Spanish Open 2020.

Increasing uncertainty about the cross-border movement of our players, vendors, and staff forces us to consider everyone’s safety and well being and the dire impact a last-minute cancellation may have on participants traveling abroad. We have determined it is unavoidable that the April event must be canceled without further delay.

We appreciate the support and constructive input many of our players and sponsors have provided during this challenging period. The well-being of our players, sponsors, and staff is our priority. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Prague for our season opener this May."

I briefly talked to Tom Cole over the weekend and asked if the first NXL would be canceled and he replied, "I don't cancel events. It might have to be postponed." He really wanted to make that announcement early this week to give everyone enough time to change plans.

The NXL's concern was that the government there might not allow the event to happen due to its size and that could come at the very last minute costing players and teams much more. This was the safest way to make sure the most people got their travel money back and were able to adjust plans.

What about Texas? Some states are already limiting public gatherings or making pro sports teams plan to play without fans.

Not surprising. Events for all sorts of things are being canceled left and right.

I heard that the Spanish event was moved to October 8-11th.

Important Information Concerning NXL Europe Spanish Open 2020‼️

Spain's Ministry of Culture and Sports has informed all federations that the Government will adopt a battery of preventive measures against the extension of the coronavirus, such as the closed-door celebration of all professional and non-professional sports competitions and events, in scope State and international.

Due to the nature of our multi-team event, it is impossible for the NXL to abide by this policy (playing all sports behind closed doors with no spectators and only team players and officials present covers most sports where just two teams play at one time in one venue). Therefore, the NXL Spanish Open 2020 is forced to be postponed to 8-11 October 2020 (8 October - Registration/Practice, 9-11 October event date).

We appreciate the support and understanding our players and sponsors have shown during this challenging period.

We look forward to hosting this event in October as well as welcoming everyone to Prague for our season opener this May.

Please contact [email protected] with any concerns you may have.

As bummed as I am, especially as I'm out currently (trying to fight it) 1400+ Euro for airfare and house.

Seeing this "The government recommended avoiding travel both within and outside Spain and banned indoor gatherings of more than 1,000 people in the regions most affected by the virus - Madrid, the Rioja wine-growing region and two areas in the northern Basque Country."

I cannot in anyway fault the NXL for this decision, it's 100% right and correct. It's a bummer but I totally agree with it.

“ the dire IMPACT a last-minute cancellation may have on participants traveling abroad”. You know what I think? They’re postponing the event so they can find a way to get impact to play in it. Change my mind!

Not sure if anyone pays attention to professional CSGO, but this also happened to a recent CSGO event in Poland.

Intel Extreme Masters Katowice is one of the biggest events of the year, but because of the virus, the Polish government revoked the tournament organizer's license only 1 day before the event reached the arena. None of the fans were allowed in the stadium and the teams finished the event without a crowd... luckily the tournament organizer refunded the tickets, but thousands of people were SOL for their flights and travel costs.

This happened only a couple weeks ago, too.

I would think that being an outside event with limited live spectatorship it would not be effected by any regulations yet to be enforced. Only time will tell.

Just buy a bunch of toilet paper and hand sanitizer. No way you can get the virus if you buy toilet paper and hand sanitizer

Forget professional CSGO

E3 is about to be cancelled. Given it's the biggest video game conference of the year, it speaks volumes about how the virus is going to effect events in general.

The 3 public universities here in Iowa are being told to prepare to finish the spring semester 100% online after spring break which starts next week I think.

Looking at the situation in Europe right now, this is a good thing. I was honestly surprised that Vegas actually happened. But doesn't seem like the US has been hit that hard (yet).

Some Boston area schools are shutting down and going fully online for the rest of the school year. A lot of offices in the area are now implementing various measures like working remotely or limiting how many people can come into the office on a given day.

Maybe this is going to be something everyone will have to get, whether, through normal transmission or vaccine, like the chicken pox.

Or it will be like the flu and we'll have it around forever and even if there are vaccines, it will be partially effective.

Or it could be the black plague...

It's def here to stay. For reference, the plague still infects 1,000 to 2,000 people every year, 80% of which is the Bubonic type. Most of these occur in remote parts of Africa and Central Asia. Usually caused by eating wild animals.
