Iron City Classic sells out in 4 minutes - 72 mech 10-man teams

We thought the Iron City Classic (ICC) sold out fast last year, but this year was even more nuts! All 72 spots were sold in 4 minutes flat. Last year they sold 54 spots in less than 20 minutes, but this year put that record to shame!

Granted, this year they did allow 27 of the top teams from last year's event to sign up early, but 4 minutes is still crazy.

Iron City Classic (ICC) is a 10-man "Classic" event that allows mechanical markers or electronic markers set to 5.5 bps.

Did your team buy a spot in time?

Video from last year's ICC:

Sick. I wonder if any big teams missed the reg.

edit: NVM. found the bit about getting top teams reg'd early.

Any issue with teams not showing up? This year, do they have stand-by teams so if a registered team does not attend a replacement can step-in? Or if not, would the matches just be forfeited?

well john, technically it was 46 teams that registered this year (72 - 26 prereg = 46). Last year he (tim) didn't have any prereg but also only took 54 teams initially - so fairly similar in team count and way faster this year. He did end up with 72 teams (technically 71 I think due to a no show) last year but only after registering the last 18 teams behind closed doors.

Last year: 54 teams in 19 minutes - that works out to just over 21 seconds a team to register

This year: 46 teams in 4 minutes - that works out to just over 5.2 seconds a team to register

Folks had speculated that the increased entry would "slow" down the registration a bit. I guess that was a poor assumption.

Tim has truly created something amazing and the players confirm that every year when registration closes faster than the previous year.

I believe there was one no show last year - the issue with having a "Stand by" team is not knowing until right before the event and then not being able to make all the travel arrangements in time (or within budget). Stand by would have to be reserved for a few local/driving distance teams if anything.

Thank you to John, Pbnation and all of the amazing teams for 4 years of endless support. We really couldnít do it without you guys. As excited as we are to sell out, Iím equally heart broken that we couldnít get everyone into the event. I really wish everyone got a chance to play Classic ten man. Itís something I have always believed in and am so happy to see it growing once again. Love you guys. Thank you!!!

Tim should expand this event out to Thursday like NXL events so that more teams can participate. Also there needs to be more mech events spread out over the year. I saw one scheduled in Texas the week before ICPL 2. That’s just bad planning imo

The longhorn classic was announced about a week before the icpl dates were.

Bad planning on the ICPL then. Either the ICPL should expand to more events or respect the individual events. We want the mech movement to expand, not cut each other off.

Well the mech movement is still secondary to the NXL and a lot of regional X-ball leagues for many people. You can only really schedule so many without stepping on someone’s toes.

I do think it’s wild that, if Tim really wanted to, he could make the 10-man portion of ICC a 3-day event and host 90-100 mech 10-man teams. Likewise, if Tom made a 3rd event, he’d have a true national mech series with 40-50 teams at each event.

Nothing short of impressive. Downright frustrating that we couldn’t get our second team registered in time, though. We have a dozen guys devastated they’re not going to get to play. There is still a chance of a team backing out, and of course Rico purchased a spot to use as a prize for the winners of the Florida Open, so we could always win them a spot if we pull a W at the 10-man in March.

ICC started the movement. If I was planning a ten man event I would sure would have planned around the ICC as many plan around World CUp. Hard to compete against the biggest ten man event on the planet.

Considering how much Tim does already in paintball I can't imagine that would be easy for him.

I know a lot of us in Texas are hoping Bunkerfest and Longhorn Classic do well so we can bring back bigger events like that.

In my opinion, I think this is better as a stand alone event.

5 man only has 5 spots left before that's capped...

I think this event and events like this has been great because Tim made it great more than what the format is which is why it's more successful than the other around it.

It's 2020 and somehow not only is there one massive multi-day 10 man event that sells out in minutes, there's options nation-wide for those who can't.
How ****ing cool is that?

Just wish we had the player base up here in western Canada.
