Protein after practice

Trying to build muscle. May be a stupid question. Would a protein shake be a good or bad idea after practice. Saturdays are my rest day and figure practice would be good for cardio.
Any opinions are apreciated.
Thank You.

As long as you are exercising, protein is never a bad idea. Even on off days.

Doing it after should help with the leg soreness

I always recommend trying to get your protein through food first. Chicken breast and eggs are great. Maybe make a bunch of chicken breast at the beginning of the week and then refrigerate them. Then after practice eat a few of them. Generally protein is good if you can't get that extra protein through food. So I'd say if you can't eat right after practice (usually within 30 minutes to an hour) then the protein shake is great. Just make sure you aren't drinking so much you aren't eating. Just remember: food first.

Paintball whether it be speedball or woodsball isn't sufficient exercise whatsoever. Having protein after would just be adding carbs + protein to your daily intake.

You're telling me that playing at a minimum 4 back to back points at a time isn't sufficient exercise? I'd like to see you're workout plan Clark Kent.

Each point is what, maybe a 25 yard sprint off the break, some crouching and squatting and kneeling, some crawling, maybe a few more short sprints.

Not really a huge workout if you are already in decent shape

What's Up guys?

My names Stuart Ridgel and I'm a certified personal trainer, have been playing paintball for over 13 years, have played a little pro ball with Chicago Aftershock. So maybe I can help shed a little light on this subject.

I track my heart rate and the calories I burn during an average day of paintball. In about a 3 to 5 hour period I'm burning anywhere from 1500-2500 calories. That's about the total number of calories a person should be consuming daily. So in my opinion and experience paintball is a mixture of high intensity training and an extreme endurance workout. That's if you're really putting in work.

When you're training or just playing around and burning through that many calories you need to be putting a lot back into your body. One to sustain a high level of energy, but also to help during the recovery of your body. I recommend if you're doing long practices like 3 to 4+ hour you need to be consuming protein and carbs before you play, a little bit while you play and as well as after you play.

Our sport can really drain your body if you're actually putting in work. If you're just playing a game and then going to sit down and smoke a cigarette for 30 minutes then playing another game and then go sit for another 30 minutes then you're not going to need as much fuel to sustain a high level of energy, but for the athlete taking it more seriously and putting in a lot of work you're going to want fuel your body to maximize your training, performance and your recovery.

Protein is used to make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals. It is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. So you need protein to rebuild your whole body. Along with fat and carbohydrates, protein is a macronutrient, meaning that the body needs relatively large amounts of it. So your body not only wants it, but needs it.

A good rule of thumb to use is for every pound you weigh you're going to want to consume at least 1 gram of protein. For body builder they usually consume 1.5 to 2 grams of protein for every pound they weigh. Also you want to spread this out throughout the day. You don't want to eat all of your protein in one sitting or just a couple sittings. You should be eating 4-5 times a day or about every 3 hours. This gives your body time to breakdown the food down and absorb the nutrients. So if you weight 170lbs then you're going to want to eat at least 170grams of protein a day or maybe even more depending on your goals.

OP asked about building muscle from practice. Based on what you just said, paintball is mostly ME/CVE, so not ideal for building muscle

He said any opinions were appreciated so I wanted to help give him as much information as possible and also help anyone else that's interested.

Like I said protein is used to make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals. It is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. So you need protein to rebuild and recover your body. Also it doesn't matter if you're doing exercise or not your body still needs protein. The body will not grow and rebuild itself without enough protein.

So drinking a protein shake after paintball practice is not a bad idea.
