So I was watching this movie where this worm was trying to swallow these people on this desert planet, and remembering how much I enjoyed almost all of David Lynch's movies except for Dune which was passable but a mess because the studio butchered it in the cut room.....

Something I've actually wondered though, how does facebook deal with thousands of posts in a private chat? Here, it gets locked and we start again. Just different ways of dealing with it?

Facebook's access to computing resources is virtually unlimited, while a much smaller site like this one can't just spin up thousands of new virtualized servers on-demand to deal with an increase in traffic or database access, for example (at least not without spending an amount of money probably several orders of magnitude more than the site takes in revenue). Different backend methods of storing and retrieving data as well. PBN runs on off-the-shelf vBulletin software with a simpler backend database structure than a site like Facebook. Facebook hires thousands of software engineers to design, implement and maintain their own huge software ecosystem and database implementations. And even then, it's hardly all roses. Facebook isn't exactly a snappy website, in my experience.

As to making forums great again, it's more aspirational I'd say. Network effects are powerful. The platform era of the web has gotten people stuck into walled gardens because that's where the people are. It's hard to launch alternative business models, because advertisers want eyeballs. Who is going to grab a billion eyeballs away from Facebook or YouTube? Centralization is great for business, great for advertising. It just sucks unimaginable amounts of monkey *** for users.
