Anyone still lurking in here? Been dead 6 months... I need opinions from Honda enthusiasts like myself. I'm having a devil of a time picking my new car.

I work in a Honda/Acura specialist shop... make money on broke ones all day long. V6's still have automatic transmission problems (and torque converter problems), 4 Cylinders still have piston ring problems (consuming oil) - some v6's do to, but to be fair all manufactures using 0-20w oil seem to be having consumption issues in the 4 cyl.

Pick your poison. Both will need pretty much the whole A/C system and power steering system (if its not electric) replaced at some point....

If your buying new, hope the above 2 issues happen when they are under warranty....

I meant new to me.

My first car was an 02 Civic coupe that I dogged on until the suspension self destructed a few years back. I had an 06 Acura TL, and now I drive an 01 Nissan Frontier that is killing me on gas and shop costs.

My criteria is as follows: $8k max, 100k max mileage, and HAS to be a manual. Every one of my vehicles has been. I think I've finally narrowed it down to two models: 06-07 Accord sedan, 06-10 Civic sedan. No LX, I want four wheel discs.

Ideally I'd want a black or grey interior, so that limits me to grey or silver pretty much. EX, EX-L, and SE are what I'm finding. I just can't decide on a year. I like the updated bumper on the 09-10 Civic, but I've always liked the LED tail lights on the 06-07 Accord.

Sounds like you got it pretty narrowed down, 7th gen civics (2000-05) blow headgaskets. Got 2 down in front of me as I type this.

06-07 accord, standard - v6 or 4 cyl.?

and brand new only means warranty - we are seeing the same issues on all of them pretty much across the board. Just FYI...

But I keep flip flopping between the two. I've only been in one 8th gen Civic and it was a riced out coupe, don't remember what it drove like. Due to being young and "racing," my 02 coupe blew the exhaust manifold. Had to have it welded twice. I have some family friends that have all owned Accords, and they ride great, but it's kinda a soccer mom car. At least the Civic is newer and gets better MPG. Which would YOU go for, personally, considering my criteria?

I found an 06 Accord SE with 92k in silver with a black interior for $7500, and an 08 Civic EX with 85k for $8000. I just don't lik the bumpers on 06-08 Civics, the 09-10 look so much better but it's next to impossible to find an 09-10 that ISN'T a LX.

4 cyl. My TL had that 3.2l V6 and she was thirsty. I got 18-19 city, 23-25 highway.

I'd do a tsx, 8th gen si, or v6 accord like you said. Each can be tastefully modded and will get you decent Mpgs. I bought a first gen RDX almost a year ago and love it but the gas mileage is horrible.

Nice to see another USAF vet, I was a 1A0

TSX = premium. No go.
SI is KILLER on insurance. $181 a month. No go.
V6 Accord gets the same MPG my TL did. Crap.

I appreciate the suggestions but I feel like I've narrowed it down to the two best cars for me. The only things I will be doing to my car is 15% tint around, black out all silver/chrome pieces, and adding fog lights. That's it. Done.

DO NOT BUY A TSX!!! those cars have more problems than any other Acura I've seen.

The 8th gen civics are known to have issues with coolant leaking through the engine block and overheating... yes, honda knows and they extended the warranty and will replace the block but I am not sure of the extension period. Maybe 8 years unlimited mileage? Have seen a few here at the shop... they have published an inspection routine.

Not meaning to sound like a downer on all these rides, I'm just in the business of specializing in certain products and these are the quirks (maybe more than a quirk if its your car!) I see. Obviously not all cars are affected but I feel it is something to make known

This is why I drive Toyota trucks....

I appreciate your input. Based on what you said about 8th gen Civics, and what I've heard about 7th gen Accords being one of the best produced as far as reliability... I think I'm gonna go with the 06-07 EX, EX-L, or SE. Whatever I can find that meets my criteria.

Word, If your going with 4 cyl. just check your oil! I know it sounds silly but NO ONE does it these days. In fact I have a 09 accord in the shop right now with a 2.4 in it that is noisy and what do you no, no oil on the dipstick. Known oil control/piston rings sticking - honda extended warranty to 125k

The timing chain tensioner's are oil controlled, therefore if run low on oil - will (or can, will if they get low enough, but has to be pretty low or be run low several times) jump time and bend valves due to being interference engines.

I change my oil religiously in my truck. I'll do the same for my Honda. My Civic NEVER burned oil, but hopefully I can get about 200k out of my new car before it gets replaced.

Ain't about changing your oil religiously, all the time, every time. They have internal engine (ring) problems... no oil on dipstick in 3,000 miles or less. We have customers who do 5,000 mile oil changes on the dot or earlier when Honda claims you can go 7,500 (or 10,000 on 0-20w) and these customers vehicles still have the problem, even though they change it early and often.

Just something to be aware of if your buying used... Wish ya luck! Hopefully you get a good one!

Are the 8th gen Accord 4 cylinders reliable? It's tough to find a decent 06-07.

yea - nothing real major on the 08-12 4 cyl. we've seen as far as like common pattern failures. The automatic trannys are solid, engines are good over all

Good deal. So now I've got my choice and a backup if I can't find one in a couple months when it is time to buy. Accord sedan 06-12. Hopefully I won't struggle to find a decent one in a six year range.
