Get rid of my best friend?

So I have about a 2.5 year old golden retriever whom I've had as a puppy. I paid only $25 for him and he is a beautiful dark red golden retriever and is very loyal, loving, and gentle. Anything a man can ask for in a dog.

But the only thing is, he is CONSTANTLY sick and needing to go to the vet. Since day one I had him, he was hit by a car by the previous owners and he had a noticable limp which has gone away. I got him and he looked nearly starved and I could literally see fleas jumping off him.

From skin infections to worms to allergies, he is needing to see a vet almost monthly. Yes, I am aware the breed and golden retrievers are constantly having skin issues and allergies etc...but he is a young dog, yet he is always sick with some sort of skin issue or throwing up.

I just got him back from the vet about three weeks ago because he ran through a screen door lacerating his legs and tearing two tendons. And now he has an anal gland problem tha tneeds to be addressed because he smells like rotten fish.

Sorry for the story, but my dog, my best friend is costing me thousands of dollars and I just can't afford him. What do to with him?

Also a little background, I'm a 22 year old college student who is barely keeping myself afloat and now I have a dog to try and keep healthy.

I had to give up my dog to the shelter after she randomly decided to attack my roommates dog. Dude, if you get rid of yours, i feel ya. Its one of the hardest things youll ever do. I miss my dog like crazy, and that was almost four years ago now. I recommend keeping it, good on you for taking good care of it through her ailments.

What TheMMPaintball said, see if you can find a way to keep in contact with your friend.

I got my dog an insurance plan that really helps me afford to keep my dog healthy. I purchased the plan after she tore the ligaments in her knee, and I wish I had gotten it earlier in her life. Since I have been on the insurance plan, it has covered 66% of her vet bills in the past year.

ASPCA Insurance has great and affordable plans at a low monthly premium.
