Squall question

I just picked up a used squall for $40 at a pawn shop. I don't think they knew what they had. I'm having a problem getting the CO2 cartridge to seat. The pin isn't far enough out to connect without really wrenching down on the thing.
I did get a couple too seat and the gun cycles but I think that's why someone got rid of it. Is there a trick to this I'm missing. It it doesn't have the quicksilver spring loaded lever, just a knurled handle. And you can see where pliers were used.
This is my first Palmer's gun and I've wanted one for years.
Any help would be appreciated.
