So, i cant be the only Person on PBN who Rides a bicycle, theres all kinds of reasons to ride, Health, recreation, Cross Training, being a hipster, not owning a car.. i am making this thread in the same of all cyclists, all here are welcome, from the the fixie vintage hipsters, to the weight weenie TT guys

i am more than a recreational Rider, but im not sure id call myself an avid cyclist, i put about 100 miles a month on my bike on average, (that since may, in the las vegas heat) i commute and ride for fun, ive learned a few things over the last few months, and i always have questions, though not always anyone to ask

i ride a 2015 specialized Crux Evo, i wanted something versatile, light, and easy to carry (i live in a 3rd floor apartment) i also wanted something that i could ride to work, ride like a road bike, and know that it wont explode if it gets in the dirt,

heres a pic of what im riding.. let the discussions commence!

this road bike with bigger tires and a little less aero,, the tires on it in the pic are 32's, i just finally go around to getting on some puncture resistant road tires, and they are 30's, the more road i ride, the more being a weight weenie sounds like fun, BUT, my wallet disagrees. sure would be fun to ride all carbon though

i asked about a cycling specific sub-forum, but was told to open a thread first and see how it goes, i would like to see this succeed, so ill do my best to keep the peace around here

300+ miles in vegas so far, to real close calls with cars that i can recollect, oddly enough with as terrible as the drivers are in this town they seem to be unusually mindful of cyclists

what kind of bike do you ride? what kind of mountain biking? (trail riding,, that extreme downhill stuff)

I mostly ride XC type stuff. I ride a carbon Giant Anthem 27.5 custom build. It has been a bad year for riding this year, though, with all of the rain. I've actually had to drag myself out onto pavement a fair amount.

not sure what steroids have to do with anything, but some people ride for necessity some ride for health, some ride because their scocial circle says to only ride bikes that were made before they were born and drink PBR, but 1 mile on a bike is still better for you than no miles on a bike

yeah that stinks, sounds like way to nice of a bike to have on asphalt, perhaps you can answer something for me.. do dropper posts work like the piston on a computer chair?

I borrowed a friend's bike this week and rode 20 miles along the shoreline. It feels great, but it's a death trap with all of the tourists walking around.

Lake Michigan. It's a nice path meant for bikes, but the tourists ruin that.

How much does an entry level bike cost?

tourists kinda ruin most things really

depends on what kind of riding you want to do, a good entry level road bike can be had for around a grand or less (shimano 105 is where is at for function and price), cruisers are less, hybrids (like a road bike but with mountain bar handles) are about the same

expect to spend between 500 to 1000 at a local bike shop, online is good second option, but avoid box stores, you get what you pay for

Nice bike Tracker.

I have a similar bike as well, but a Norco Cross bike (Threshold A2). Terriffic on or off road. Nice things about these cross bikes are they are fast on the road and can take some off road abuse unlike a dedicated road bikes.

yeah, that was my motivation for going that direction, i wanted something i could ride roads, but not worry if i got it off in the dirt

Most roads are so bad and rough, it is sometimes harder on a road bike.

I have also a urban bike with straight bars which is my beater and commuter for downtown use. The pot holes are the killers.

I tried a fixie. Hate them. You are in the wrong gear 90% of the time.

I get the allure of fixies (no weight.. Getting back to what it was like to ride as a kid). But Vegas is anything but flat.. I don't think my knees would appreciate climbing a hill on one..

got out to my first cyclocross event last night.. which may or may not coincide with me buying/building up a new set of wheels and rims.. which after playing around with my front derailleur this evening, my rear bearing sounds like CRAP... so it sounds as good of a time as any to learn how to rebuild/replace bearings

been a few days with no noise, still haven't gotten my wheels.. rotors should be here today, cassette and skewers came in the other day.. also should be getting a replacement freehub for my stock wheels into the LBS today

Check the seals around the hub. Sometimes it gets pinched exposing the bearing so dirt can enter into the bearings.

I always remove the junky factory bearing grease and replace it with the Park Tool Poly grease. Also, I have found many times that there is always a few pieces of metal from machine that is still in the hubs. Those scrap metal will kill your bearings.

ooo! good point, ill be sure to check that on the new one, and pick up some poly lube (i hadnt really thought ahead about what kind of lube i was going to use) i have dow 33 and a good bit of pure silicone grease left over from when i was in the air force, then of course the crap ton of paintball lubricants ive picked up over the years
