And to add to that Hitchhiker's note... DON'T PANIC
Try to keep a cool head with all that action going on around you. Remember, SAFETY FIRST! Be mindful of your shots, who's/what's behind your target (in woodsball, there may not be any nets), is your target already out? Sometimes it's better not to shoot right away and to wait a little bit to see what the situation is.
Remember to look around and be aware of the big picture. Sometimes we all get tunnel vision or become locked in a duel trying to get a hit on one opponent, only to find that we are the only ones left on the field, or that the rest of our team had to move away from you.
Also, learn the physics of paintball. It helped me immensely to understand what I can and can't do with a marker and paint. Paintball will always have defined limits:
- You can only apply so much force to a paintball before it breaks.
- Paintballs (and this depends on type and quality) need to be traveling at a certain velocity before they can break, tourney level balls will break at lower velocity than woodsball or some field paints. This tells you how far you can shoot and still have your paint break on target.
- Paintballs will never be perfect because of the way they have to be manufactured, so if you're expecting a bullet-like trajectory, precision, and consistency, you'll be disappointed. But to me, that's what makes things interesting and fun. Hint: Old paint sucks more.
- Know how your marker works. Not just how to turn it off and on or engage/disengage the safety or pressurize/depressurize it. I'm talking about understanding how the air flows through the marker and how all the moving parts contribute to sending that orb of paint downrange. Helps when you have a problem on the field and knowing if you can fix it right then and there or if you have to take it back to your workbench.
