J4 Paintball announces new Mech Paintball Patent

Knoxville TN – 6/27/2020

J4 paintball has filed Patent Pending status, 62/705,423, for ‘Feedback Circuit for Pneumatic Launchers’, a mechanical system that will allow most paintball guns to self time and cancel out the trigger signal, allowing for more mechanical paintball designs that normally wouldn’t function from a normal trigger input. This new design allows for many existing marker designs to be able to be produced in a mechanical format, with the timing being based on feedback taken at several points in the system, even from mechanical inputs and related. This design cancels the trigger input within milliseconds of the feedback input, allowing the valve to reset and recharge even while the trigger is held down.

The patent rights will be easily distributed, allowing for many open designers to use it, and allowing the paintball industry to grow an expand the options for mechanical play. In a recent interview the patent submitter, Josh Coray, stated that he expects to allow anybody, from large corporations to individuals to use the patent, and that he will even share CAD, help with design inputs and even run parts so that many options, even retrofits into existing markers, can be obtained.

J4 Paintball wants to make a serious commitment to mechanical play and options, in by sharing the patent, CAD, assisting design and machine time they feel it can open up many more avenues for the paintball industry and for developers to bring new product to market. J4 Paintball looks forward to helping the mech paintball movement grow.

Sounds really interesting!

From what I can tell it seems like you might be able to make practically any Electronic Marker into its own mechanical version?

Awesome to see so much effort across the board now put into mech platforms.

Nice! Between 3 people my Torque saw about a case of paint today at Supergame and performed flawlessly.

adapt a eye cover and bolt to allow the exhaust signal to get to the circuit.
all the rest exists in the frame.

mech timmies are a thing now.
you could also use a conventional sear system for the trigger, to keep the trigger and the firing signal (3 way valve most likely) independent of one another.

Just let the exhaust gas RT the trigger sear to reset the sear.

Takeup / pretravel: the forplay before sexyfuntime.
Break: a cam will dictate how long the trigger and the sear will open the valve
Overtravel nothing here till the trigger is released and until the internal sear can be reset.

Looking forward to getting one of the Torques in my hands. That Storm Trooper Torque looks amazing, hoping that’s not a limited release. And glad to see J4 doing well. It’s really great to still see smaller paintball companies with a passion for the sport.

You've got it!

Potentially you could even get the trigger input from the ram travel. Have an input from the forward travel of the ram, just a small drilled port. You could even adjust where it trips to adjust total dwell, and no FSDO because the pickup is at the hammer distance point, not just from the breech sensing point. That way you could have the ram switching to rearward travel right as it hits the valve.

The timmy is one of the few ram styles that it would work perfectly with.

Is there any chance you'll produce a contained module that can incorporate a somewhat universal adaptability? It would open door to the mad scientists with just a drill and tap set.

If nobody else does, we can. I actually sent some of this to Colin from DW, I would love to see him be able to adapt this to work with the hAir trigger - and with the Proteam Patent holding him back, he deserves to get a couple wins in there.

But it shouldn't be too crazy to build up. A block with an LPR input, feedback input, and output for a 3way type action would be very easy to do. Do a few hundred sets and call it good maybe?

The Torque design is very clever, IMO. I hate the parts were not machined to spec on the original launch. Now that they're making their own parts in their own machine shop, a Torque will be the next gun I purchase. I'm thinking that all the other companies will start using a board with Bluetooth communication after seeing theirs.

I am not an engineer, but I'll say that the design of that Torque gun made me smile the same way I did when I saw the lever-actuated valve in the LV1. I think they've got some very innovative/clever engineering minds associated with their company. Maybe Imped will tell us how clever these new ideas are after he studies them? (hint, hint)

Edit: Isn't IronyUSA an engineer, too? He could also share his opinion!

Both Imped and IronyUSA have or have had one.

I've owned my Torque for almost 5 years. It's an extremely clever, well designed marker that I love to use. I'm very excited to see a complete J4-built Torque soon.

Mine was in use almost all of Supergame Central last weekend, between myself and a few friends. Everyone that used it loved it. Zero issues whatsoever.

I have a torque and I like Josh more than I like this iteration of the gun. There's a mix of minor engineering gripes and heavy manufacturing deficiencies on the gun, but the general concept is cool and shooting enjoyment is there as well. I don't really love stacked-tube guns, but the torque has potential to be one of my favorites.

I think you would feel different if you had to deal with J4 when the Torque was first released. BTW, that Torque that Imped is shooting was mine, I was the original owner.

I love the idea but this seems to be the general consensus, hopefully they get there in a few revisions.

It's seen *plenty* of revisions since I first received it.

My expectations were set appropriately, I think. I knew I was getting into more of a project than a PE marker. My level of tolerance when it comes to tinkering and making adjustments (common and less common) is also quite high.

Very true sentence. We dropped the ball hard.

That being said, we have picked it up some. And we are taking QC back into our own hands. In a lot of ways.

BUT: The thread is supposed to be about making other guns mech now. What is the preferred mech 3-way switch for guns? And, we can make the Mac33/44 into a simple pneumatic controlled circuit fairly easy for running some of these guns. Would that be something people would want?
