Bill and Dawn Mills of Warpig.com elected to The Paintball Hall of Fame

Bill and Dawn Mills

Paintball Media - WARPIG.com

As a high school student Bill Mills read about the newly founded sport of paintball in Games Magazine in 1983 and jumped at his first opportunity to play at Matt Brown’s Adventure Game of America field near Coarsegold, CA in the fall of 1986. The following summer Dawn Lindsey met Bill while the two were working for the Boy Scouts of America and by the fall they were playing paintball together as a part of the Instigators paintball team out of Hanford, CA. Early adopters of the Internet through their work at the California State University, Fresno Computer Services department, Bill and Dawn took part in the voting process to create the rec.sport.paintball newsgroup and were involved in the online paintball community through usenet and IRC (Internet Relay Chat).

In the early 90s, while working as freelance digital content developers, Bill and Dawn met and were playing paintball with Steve Mitchell who had been archiving painball content from Usenet onto an FTP server, and built the Internet’s first paintball web page as an index to that archive. The site was called Warpig, due to the Internet address of its server – a Mac IIci desktop computer.

As Bill and Dawn started contributing content to paintball print magazines as well as Warpig, Steve took a new job at Jet Propulsion Labratories and handed over the reins of the web site to Bill and Dawn.

When a digital media trade journal article touted the success of a web site that Budweiser used in a promotion that had as many visitors in a month as Warpig was getting in a week, Bill and Dawn realized it was becoming a serious media outlet in its own right.

They moved Warpig to its address where it became best known - WARPIG.com, with the support of the site’s first two sponsors – Paintball Industry Magazine and Paintball News. Dawn coined the acronym World And Regional Paintball Information Guide to fit the name that had already become familiar in the sport.

Bill and Dawn were soon traveling to events throughout North America writing stories, reviewing products, taking photographs and shooting videos. In 1997, seven years before YouTube, Bill and Dawn launched PigTV with program length (20 minutes to an hour) videos from paintball events streamed to a global audience online. The pair took advantage of growing technology to spread the word of paintball by creating 3D models of paintgun internals explaining how they work to virtual reality walk-throughs of event fields.

When asked what drew the web site’s large audience they had an answer that was simple: “Content is king. Put useful information online and people will come to read it.” Despite numerous pitches from the industry, they turned away proposals to charge paintballers to access premium content, open a retail storefront in the site or to sell it to a company that would - even with an offer of $1,000,000 on the table - because they believed the site should remain by and for players. They believed that selling products on the web site would change it from a trusted source of informative product reviews to an online catalog, which would not be as beneficial to players trying to figure out what gear would be their best personal choice.

Bill and Dawn greatly enjoyed the extended paintball family they became a part of as they traveled during tournament paintball’s golden age. While they have since moved on to other industries and are no longer actively creating public paintball content, they keep WARPIG.com online as an information archive for the players.

Of course!

Bill and Dawn deserve it! They did so much to help grow the sport. I would have never become so interested in the sport if it weren't for their efforts at Warpig.

It is all on Facebook for now. https://www.facebook.com/theofficial...allhalloffame/

It is sponsored by CPX Events but we do not have a voting say in who gets in. The new class is announced shortly before each year's Living Legends.
Below I will add the list of members in already and the voting process so you can see the vision behind it. (Sorry the name list is all capped. It is the only copy and paste list I have)

Paintball Hall of fame.
When the idea was come up with we talked to some of the people that are widely thought of as Legends of the sport on what we would need to do to give the HOF the credibility within the player's eyes. So we came up with a Plan.

1) Start with the first class of people that unquestioned Legends of the sport and willing to work with other Legendary people to create a board of voters. This board set up a set of rules and guidelines that assure that this doesn't become a popularity contest. The people who are on the board and vote are anonymous. this keeps them from being able to be influenced by any outside resources lobbying for their favorite legend to become a Hall of famer.

2)The board created categories to make sure that all types of players, innovators, field owners, media, and unfortunately posthumously. As was pointed out they have focused on some of the pioneers of the sport so they can be honored and thanked in person whenever possible. I know personally, I would have liked to see both Bob and Sal be handed their awards.

3) Modern era players and such will be added but by the very nature of a HOF it becomes somewhat of a lifetime achievement award. So there are many very worthy people who deserve the honor we have decided on certain rules on class size and that when someone gets in has no bearing on ranking their importance to the sport. Being first class in or the most recent class in, they are all equally important to our history.

4) Many, myself included do not personally know the story behind every Legend that is in or will be in which is why I do not get a vote either, LOL. But that is exactly why the HOF is so important. To tell the history of how we got to where we are. Not everyone will agree with everyone who gets in or when, but I can promise it is being taken very seriously by those who do vote.

5) Finally, it made sense to us at CPX Events to partner with the Legends to set this up and financially support it by providing funds for the plaques and nameplates the Legends receive. We also work alongside the traveling paintball museum to provide players the chance to follow and be part of history.

Hopefully, I answered some of your questions. Please go to the HOF page and give it a like and if you want to share with your friends who play so we can celebrate the sport we love together.

I still stop by warpig every once in a while hoping to see a new tourney write up... Videos are great but nothing beat a long story by Hollywood.

Heck, my online name came from PigChat a thousand years ago. Had no idea what to call myself, there were all these people with cool sounding names. Figured I'd take my preferred play style and combine it with my job from the military. Kind of stuck after a few months.

That happened to me, I've been forever known by this odd handle in 20 some odd years of retrospect later...

I still go there, last time was to read up on the Montneel Mega Z as I was nostalgically thinking about old guns I had owned.

I still use Warpig all the time. I look up teams that won past events and photos to see what jerseys teams wore for specific events.

The internet wasn't really a thing when paintball started. I can understand trying to get some of the older folks who were there when paintball began.

Some are going to wind up being posthumous, unfortunately. I'd think Colin Thompson of LAPCO would eventually be on the list. That man was incredible just to chat with.

Paintball News Rules
  1. No Upping threads. If you have something to say, please do, but don't post in the thread just to take it to the top of the forum.
  2. Do not post "1st post", "1st", "First post" or anything similar (or with any other number) at any point in a thread, even if you post a comment too. It is really annoying and it will result in a ban.
  3. If you don't like something, say why instead of just calling it ugly, lame, gay or any other name. If it is old, simply post a link or report the post with a link to the older News thread.
  4. Please don't post links for places to buy items. That encourages stores, sponsored players and other people to do it and spam the site.
