I call it the "ice cream model".

Back in the day a big carton of ice cream was a half gallon, 64 oz.

Over the last 20 years the price point has remained, but the product has gotten smaller. Every few years we lose 4 oz of ice cream. Now that carton is 48 oz, but the same price or higher.

Is it just a higher dollar price or is it actually more expensive after adjusting for inflation?

Hard to say. I remember when Dreyer's went from 64 to56 ozs.

At that point it's was simply cost cutting. They used the same SKU and made no mention to retailers or customers.

Since then my work changed and I pay less attention.

bryers isnt ice cream tho. so the lament of getting rooked over an engineered substandard product is like complaining that the water was wet.

ninja edit-
dryers not bryers. lol didnt know they existed.

still breyers sucks. its a pricey frostee.

I think paint is so much harder though. Food companies can be fairly creative in the way they engineer their packaging and adjust sizes ever so slightly to reduce volume. Paint, its a lot easier to physically see that they are reducing ball count.

In my country (Canada) you're lucky to pay $90 for a case of 2,000 when you play recball and have field membership. The average price is closer to $120, actually.

Paintball here is in sharp decline, mainly due to the competition from airsoft, which is far cheaper. The last thing we need is a sharp increase in paintball prices that goes beyond what a required inflation adjustment entails. It will drive another stake into the sport here.

I'm actually glad to hear that. It seems after all that that within the Kingston-Windsor corridor (the heartland of the country, really) paintball is doing better. OTOH, in Quebec paintball is in really bad shape.

They'll just hike up the prices of the 2000 round cases until they exhaust the old stock of boxes before switching to the 1600 round cases

Nope. But I do remember 2500 ball cases back in the early 90's. Talk about not good paint. It was $160 for the case. A buddy and I split it, and we both played all summer on that paint. Now, plug that into an inflation calculator. That's $315 in today's dollars. Breaking that down, it's the equivalent of $0.126 per ball. Times 2000 to simulate a "today" case, that would be $252 for a case of paint. Solid deal, huh?

At the risk of sounding like "that old guy", one major difference was that nobody (OK, probably a few did) at that time went out and thought about shooting a case a day in recreational play. The game changed over time, and it became much more focused on shooting... a lot. Is that a good thing? It's fun to shoot a lot. No question. Should it be mandatory to play? There's plenty of people who don't even shoot a bag in a day, and they have a ball. Kind of comes down to what each person is willing to do in order to shoot a lot of paint, and what "a lot" means to them.

A belated thank you for the reply. I appreciate it.

I've never been to Stalker, as I'm closer to Steven's Point/Wausau. Paintball is pretty much dead to me up here right now, with GVA having a MASSIVE price hike on paint and I'm not impressed with Outdoor Adventures' safety standards & paint buying policy. So Splat-Tag and Siege are where I usually go. Long drive but it's worth it.

Here's the abridged version of what happened.

Kore (and probably other paint companies) asked stores and fields if they should make cases smaller. The stores and fields mostly said "no." So Kore didn't change their case size.

I know you most likely can't say, but what was the reasoning behind the lower amount per case? Production problems where they were afraid that it may be impossible to produce 2000?

Honestly, why? It's not like that's the fixed amount we all shoot in a day or match? It's just an arbitrary number we are used to. I personally like things staying the same and don't love change, but I don't see why this issue attracted such vitriol.

I usually shoot about 3k rounds playing airball on a typical layout but it varies so much that smaller cases might encourage me to stay and buy another (or buy two up front) to play longer since it's less "commitment."

I wouldn't be shocked if the assumption is that the ball count per case would go down by 400, but the price of the case would either stay the same or go up.

Because, you know, prices on paintball things don't EVER go up, right?

( Perception ) -Probably a mix of messing with people’s money, which is always a sore issue with many, coupled with the idea of it being a greedy move/decision. We couldn’t help but jump to conclusions, but it sounded like we were about to get less and pay more. I already saw an increase in price for paint this year, and the idea of possibly getting less paint, for who knows how much? That idea didn’t sit well with me.

Due to the initial rumor I was definitely wondering just how bad the pandemic and inflation had an effect on business. I wanted to wait for more official info before I had a legit reaction though.

This never made any sense. Changing box size would just increase costs. Increasing price per case is what we will see.

I would like to continue to buy the exact same case of 2,000 Evil paintballs at every tournament for the next 30 years or until I die, whichever comes first.

The only thing that needs to be changed is getting rid of pink fill and if the price per case goes up over time, so be it. We’re playing with Biden Bucks now; everything costs more than it used to.

I'm curious about the math here. Shipping around more cardboard per ball doesn't seem like a great tradeoff. Whatever you gain in keeping the price the same with less balls per box, don't you lose when you pay to ship less balls and more cardboard per skid?

But I really don't care either way 2500 or 2000 or 1600. I do think there's more angst over this than using recycled gelatin, etc which actually makes the ball worse.

If the skids ship by weight then the paint companies would save quite a bit over time. And if they keep the same boxes they don't need new packaging machines (no new overhead costs).
