You seemed to have already figured this out, but I'm answering this for reference of other users looking at the same question.
1.38 is the most recent firmware being released with the GOG. generation of the JT impulse (very few differences, mainly color options and different solenoid with lower dwell)
However, some people, not all, are having issues with the marker's eyes or chopping on the 1.38 firmware. The simplest solution to this is to set the firmware back to the 1.30 software released with the previous KEE generation of the JT impulse. As far as most of us can tell, there is no advantages offered by the 1.38 software. I imagine GOG just wanted to tweak a few things for their benefit.
11/14/2015 EDIT: the 1.3 software was removed from paintball solutions. Here's a link to a public dropbox folder containing the installer application, as well as just the 1.3 firmware file if you already have the installer.
