Post Speedballers: How do you stay in shape?

I took a 12 year break from the game of paintball and have recently made my way back out to the local fields.

I consider myself to be a pretty in shape individual, however playing these past few weekends has proven my perspective wrong.

Beyond endurance exercises what do you find beneficial in your routine that helps fight fatigue during those long field event days?

Interested to hear others thought and suggestions. Cheers.

May not be the most popular thread moving forward. Maybe the answer to staying in shape is playing even more.

Yeah I was going to say, the best thing I do is play often as possible. I don't have a lot of time for an exercise routing but I play pretty much every week and stay as active as possible the rest of the time.

Good point. I avoid the ol "exercise routine" which is why im out playing paintball. As the weather is starting to behave out here now ive been getting back out more consistently. Each session better than the last during and after recovery.

You have a great run down, thanks. Due to my work commitment and hours I can only make it to our field during Sat-Sun.(May need to quit my job to play more ) Moving forward weather permitting I hope to get out every Sunday to run points with the locals.

Very true. I do bike around town plus two and from the office weather permitting. That has been my main source of exercise for a few years now.

One of the biggest things I've found Is properly stretching before you play. I notice on days when I don't stretch properly I'm a bit sore the next day. General cardio like swimming or running is a must.

Paintball is more of an anaerobic sport than an endurance sport. Moreover, the biggest risk is joint injury.

Sprints, plyometrics, core exercises are more beneficial.

Long distance running doesn’t hurt, necessarily, but doesn’t develop the correct muscles that help in the sport.

In the gym, lifting for size (“getting swole&rdquo also doesn’t help in this sport. Lifting for high repetitions with lower weight develops more speed and injury resistance. And it is important to do exercises for smaller muscle groups, especially the rotator cuff (shoulders).

Any kind of drills you can do during the week day will help. The biggest challenge in progressing in this sport is the inability to practice more frequently. Three 1-hour practices during a week is more beneficial than one 3-hour practice on a weekend.

Filling your Tank at home with a Handpump.

Im teching a few markers so i have to do this at least 2 times a week (1 1/2 h per 2,5k tank fill). It is quite exhausting and you can vary how you pump --> more hand, more upper body or with bodyweight for you legs.

Air + little extra workout - win/win

This sounds brutal! I considered getting one of these to help with doing at home maintenance on my own equipment, how long do you have to pump to get enough air just to check for leaks and what not?

Enough air (~500 psi) to check for leaks should take you 5-10min (48 ci)

A 1k fill in a 48ci will take you around ~15-20min. pumping - 30min. with 1 break (pump needs to cool down).

The higher the fill the harder you have to pump and more breaks are need to let the pump cool down.

0 - 1k is easy, 1 - 1,5 k takes some effort, 2k is what i fill max. with my handpump. 3k is possible (did it once with a 12ci)

Depending on your size/weight/strength you will have to start using your bodyweight somehwhere in between 1,5 - 2,5k.
