Running Time: 1 Hour, 15 Minutes

On Friday October 25, 2002 Jeremy Salm of Avalanche walked into the woods adjacent to the National Paintball Supply field at the PSP World Cup, wearing all black… and carrying a black marker. What transpired in the next hour changed the game of professional paintball forever.

The Culture
Game fixing, playing the gray area, positioning, illegal ramping guns… and outright cheating was rampant in the 1990s and early 2000s in professional paintball.

The Genesis
While walking the fields for the five-man event Jeremy noticed that one side of the ten-man field was not netted.

Why?
Was it arrogance? Was it pressure to win?

How?
A borrowed black marker, some face paint, black clothing and a well-conceived plan that went awry.

What?
Avalanche was playing Ground Zero Gold on the south end of the PSP World Cup property on the National Paintball Supply field. From out of bounds, Jeremy Salm shot at multiple Ground Zero Gold players at the start of the game.

Who knew?
This is the billion-dollar question, that for the past 18-plus years has not been answered. Until now.

no way! one of the best douchebag stories of all time in paintball. I like how they interviewed a couple legit douchbags to tell the story of a douchbag, lol.

I hope the others in the woods with him and those who knew beforehand, the sponsor(s) and those who helped cover it up, all come forward, apologize, publicly - and accept their place in history next to Jeremy

this is gonna be good! Seems like majority of Avalanche was not in on it, but real excited to get the full scoop.

The closest public talk about it was a few years ago was on Bear Degideio's podcast where Billy Ceranski and Steve Rabacokoff tell it the way they knew it.

John, I could you make this available to purchase without becoming a monthly subscriber? I loved the complete history but I really don't want to sign up for another reoccurring monthly fee.

I think you would have to be pretty gullible to think the team did not know what was going down. If you played in that era you will remember rampant cheating was a fundamental and celebrated skill in paintball (even more so than today's game). I never felt that this was any more egregious than Todd or Kenny shooting from the dead box.

Lasoya talked about it on Carl Markowski’s podcast a couple years back. They whole team had discussed it but at least according to Lasoya most of the team thought it was a joke. He claims he didn’t realize it was happening for real until Salm wasn’t behind him during that game.

My team shared a pit space with Avalanche this event. I saw the reactions. The team did not know.

There were definitely people that you would think have known that had no clue, I guess we'll find out shortly

Paintball News Rules
  1. No Upping threads. If you have something to say, please do, but don't post in the thread just to take it to the top of the forum.
  2. Do not post "1st post", "1st", "First post" or anything similar (or with any other number) at any point in a thread, even if you post a comment too. It is really annoying and it will result in a ban.
  3. If you don't like something, say why instead of just calling it ugly, lame, gay or any other name. If it is old, simply post a link or report the post with a link to the older News thread.
  4. Please don't post links for places to buy items. That encourages stores, sponsored players and other people to do it and spam the site.
If you have questions, please post them in the Talk to Mods/Admins forum.
