Important Planet Eclipse CS2 Firmware Update

Planet Eclipse CS2 Firmware Update

At last weekend’s NXL Las Vegas Open there were two incidents involving Planet Eclipse Sponsored Pro teams that led to 2 players receiving match bans.

Both players entered the field with a CS2 marker in its Factory Default mode, Uncapped Semi.

At this time we are unsure of exactly how the markers got into Factory Default. It is difficult to speculate, but it could have been through accident, malicious intent, faulty batteries or a technical issue in the firmware. What we do know is that the CS2 has been in the field with the same electronics package for nearly 18 months and these are the first cases we have seen or heard of of this type. The circuit boards from the markers in question are on their way back to PE HQ in the UK to undergo rigorous inspection and evaluation.

In the meantime, in order to mitigate any possibility of this happening again in the future, we have decided to release a new version of firmware for the Primary Board of the CS2.

Historically the Factory Default mode has always been Uncapped Semi. The issue with any marker that is reset to Factory Default, intentionally or not, is that this Uncapped Semi mode in not legal in any current competitive format, including the NXL. With the jeopardy being so high for infringing firing mode rules at events like the NXL, and the stakes so high for players and teams, we have decided to re-evaluate the Factory Default mode.

After much internal deliberation we have decided that the safest course of action is to implement a new version of firmware that now has Capped 10bps Semi as the Factory Default firing mode. This means any marker that is returned to Factory Default for any reason, intentional or not, will still be legal when entering the field of play. The only caveat being that a Factory Default set marker would still infringe at any 5.5 Classic/Mech events or any format that restrict the ROF to anything below 10BPS.

At Planet Eclipse we pride ourselves on the fact that all our hardware and firmware is developed in-house by our very own Steve "Flash" Monks. This gives us the unique ability to react quickly and decisively in delivering updates and changes to players and customers when and where they are needed.

As of today E-Portal 4, version 4.0.6.0, which is available to download for free on the Planet Eclipse website, will include the new version (V1.30) of the CS2 Primary Board Firmware. It can be found here: https://planeteclipse.com/eportal/v4/.

If you already have E-Portal 4 installed then it will check for updates whenever you EXIT the program and download them automatically the next time that you run the program. To clarify, if you have E-Portal already installed, open E-Portal 4, then close it. The new update will then download automatically. Wait for this to happen, then re-open E-Portal and install the V1.30 firmware into your CS2.

This can be done by selecting the programmer from the E-Portal 4 dashboard, load the CS2 Primary Version 1.30 file, connect your marker via USB and program the firmware. Instructional videos are available at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...wc5hatTTv6Z1nC

Planet Eclipse will also be able to update the firmware at all events supported by a Planet Eclipse tech.

Finally, we just want to add a HUGE congratulations to Impact for taking the first event of the 2019 season in such convincing style!

Smart that you are making it 10 BPS semi-auto. I like that it will be legal but people have to adjust it into ramp.

I blame Dave Bains for the uncapped ramp I mean semi.

Do all electronic Eclipse markers use the same factory default of uncapped semi?

Yes. Having NXL as the default would work as well, but then there are potential liability issues with shipping a gun that is stock or defaults into an enhanced mode.

Yes all PE guns have historically shipped with uncapped semi as the factory default mode.

I wish Boeing took importance of default mode(input) into consideration when they designed the MCAS.

Personally I would have default mode go to the min rate of fire for the marker.... The player will know something is wrong and try to address it. They are given a chance to play the point, granted at a slower rate, but definitely not getting banned.

Not just PE guns. Uncapped semi is the default mode out the box for all markers I can think of.

I'm surprised this doesn't happened more tbh, but it should be on the player (and their team) to make sure all markers are legal when hitting the field.

Smart move to lock down the factory setting though, paintballers shouldn't be trusted

Brilliant! I wouldn’t be surprised if more companies adopt this going forward.

Good job getting ahead of everything. Still dont understand why people were getting upset, the info from Lauren Kelly and the interviews players did on webcast made it pretty much seem like it was 100% user error that each problem occurred.

Regardless of user error or not, I think that making this change makes a lot of sense for our players and customers moving forward. It removes a lot of potential issues, and it's safe. I wouldn't be surprised if this slowly filtered down to become the industry standard.

If there is usually a tech at the UPL, then yes they should be able to do it for you.

Check the USB cable. That is the #1 reason for non-connection. Most USB cables that are supplied with equipment these days are charging cables only. They are not wired for full communication, just for power. Make sure they are USB-A to Micro-C USB cable. Not just a charging cable.

You know what would also prevent this from happening?

Pocket Hulk moved to Utah, so there may not be a PE tech at UPL events (unless I can get certified, then I’d go represent PE anywhere you wanted to send me ).
