In the news section about the DSR, billy wing addressed why they still use the eyepipe. And as much as I dislike the pipe, his reply was actually something I never thought of.
Everyone thinks the pipe is there in case of paint breaking in then breech and it’s ability to clean itself. That is true. But billy said it’s also there to help prevent breech wear over time. And that is something I’ve never heard dye say about the eyepipe.

The bolt rides on the front o-ring under the feedneck. That's the only thing touching the breech. As long as you don't put a handful of sand in the gun, breech wear is nonexistent. While I have seen matrices with a bit of breech wear, I've seen many more without it.

Oh. I agree it all depends on the conditions you play in.
I had just never heard that reason as an explanation for why dye continues to use a eyepipe.
I can go without one. My shocktech has very little breech wear, if any. But they don’t make them like they used to either.

We like the Eye pipe system for a couple reasons besides protecting the eyes and helping to keep paint from leaching in behind the eyes, and quick access for cleaning and service.
Stops breach wear - I hated shooing a gun for a full season and having a raw, scratched up breach by the 4th event. i found that it effected my fps consistency and really hurt resale value. now a quick pipe change and the breach is like new.
Eliminates small eye plate screws and eye plates - We wanted to eliminate the small screws that, if stripped or damaged, can prevent access to your eyes and detents.
This also eliminates seams and cavities where paint and dirt can collect.
We also like being able to eliminate the eye plates and screws altogether making the guns, in our opinion, more streamlined and making the gun's components more fully integrated.
Another way we look at it is; Eyes and eye plates were a bolt-on upgrade path about 18 years ago, and this is still how must guns do it 18-20 years later. Yes the system is functional, but I also believe there is room for some form of improvement with every functional system or product in the world. Except for Dr. Pepper and ice cream, i'm pretty happy with

Yeah most guns made nowadays suck IMHO. They are treated like disposable cameras. As far as stripping eye cover screws goes, I've never understood how some people could be so ham-fisted to do that. One other thing that I'm worried about is if dye will continue to make eye pipes for older guns. I have a dm7 and it's hard enough to get parts for it now, even directly from Dye. I call them up all the time and I get the "Oh we don't have that because it's an old gun". Well in 5 years, what are the chances they are still gonna be making eye pipes for a gun that's 15 years old? Gun will be useless without an eye pipe.

As far as I know, dye sent a cease and desist letter to ccluff for these eye pipes. So even though he has (had?) them ready to go, they're not available to the public.

It's not for me. I don't feel comfortable leaving the eyes completely unprotected. And honestly, I don't break eye pipes too much anyway.

You just have to make sure the barrel seats down fully against the eyepipe or it'll bounce back and forth and make a pinging noise. Also, the rubber eye carrier can stick against the brass, so adding a little grease to the outside of the eyepipe helps to install/remove it. It's an issue in my DM12 but not my DM9.

And yeah, there are just holes for the eyes. I think ccluff said putting acrylic in the holes and selling them like that would infringe on Dye's patent.

And I take great offense to being jerked around with "customer service" and having to call back 3 times, and then getting the wrong parts. But please, allow me to apologize for my opinion offending you. Didn't dye tell the OP he couldn't make these for some patent reason or something?

Firebirdue-I shoot a dye gun cuz it was dirt cheap and they work as well as any other gun. But my experience dealing with their employees has never been a positive one.

If you have a problem moving forward, you can contact me or Billy here and we'll do our best to get you taken care of.

Ok, saying dye is a crap company is a generalization I shouldn't have used. Moving on. Why are the pipes brass now instead of aluminum?

We really are working hard to try to improve our service.

I'd suspect the brass was used because it's easier to cut, especially with some of the intricate details that are normally molded. I'd probably prefer brass, personally.
