Hopefully will have my new fork on my bike next friday, Manitou Minute Expert 130mm, Manitou is giving it to me for $210+shipping once I send in my old fork Thats like $140 off, for a fork I picked up at a swap meet for $10 lol
Bike will gain a pound, but it will be worth it to have a pretty decent fork. (my current mars fork is 1428g)

Still waiting on the fork, but mostly assembled now! Guesstimated weight with fork is around 26.2.

Didn't know where else to post this but I'll try here.

I need to get exercise and I do lots of short strips and **** I need a bike again for. I might do some trail biking possibly, not sure.

What should I look for under $300? New and used.

If there's the possibility you'll do some trails (and by trails, I mean riding on rocks/roots/dirt, not a paved trail) then get a hardtail mountain bike (only has a suspension fork).

Can't go wrong with the name brands--Trek, Specialized, Giant, GT, Fuji, Gary Fisher, etc. Sometimes people on Craigslist will sell good bikes they've barely used for a good price.

If you can assemble the bike yourself, you can get a good deal on bikesdirect.com.

Other than that, there's your local bike stores which may not be a bad idea if you've never purchased a bike before.

Can I assemble one of these bikes with basic mechanic tools/allen wrenches?

I have lots of tools and have done lots of auto repairs which isn't really quite the same but should help me out with building a bike.

Also, is Motobecane good? Seems like many of the bikes on that site are that brand.

The only thing you might need is a bike wrench

You may not even need that.

Motobecane is fine. The company that provides them frames is the same company that provides frames for Trek, GT, Jamis and some other big names. The components are either sram or shimano. I don't ever see bad reviews for their bikes so I'd say it's a safe bet.
