Can I edit my own posts?

You can edit your own posts anywhere in the forum as long as the thread is still open and not so old that it has been archived.

To edit or delete your posts, click the button by the post you want to edit. If your post was the first in the thread, then deleting the post will result in the removal of the entire thread.

After you have made your modifications, a note may appear, which notifies other users that you have edited your post and when . Administrators and moderators may also edit your messages and a note with the name of the mod who edited it along with when they edited it will appear.

You may not delete threads or posts in the Buy/Sell/Trade section. If you want to mark an item sold or off the market, simply edit the first post and add the words "Sold." You may want to do this prominently or more than once so users notice it. You can also ask a moderator to close your post but they will not delete B/S/T posts.

You can not edit the title of a thread. However, you can delete your post (which will delete the entire thread if it is the first post) and then repost with the correct title.

Why have some of the words in my post been replaced with ****?

Swear words (even partially censored swear words) are not allowed in text, pictures, signature or avatars on PbNation and will result in an infraction. Leaving out letters or self censoring by replacing letters with symbols is strictly prohibited because it does not allow the filter to pick the word up.

When you let the swear filter work, it censors every single letter. When you do it yourself and only partially censor the word, users can still tell what you meant. There are three acceptable ways of doing this. You can not swear. You can completely censor the word using asterisks marks like this: ****. Or you can spell the word correctly as long you aren't using it to insult other members.

You are allowed to use swear words within reason on PbNation so long as you aren't using them to insult other users. We have a built in swear filter that will automatically pick up swear words and convert them to ****. You may turn this feature off in your control panel under "Edit Options." Simply set "Word Censorship" to No. This will allow you to view swear words.

Certain words have also been censored by the administrator. If your posts contain any censored words, they will be blanked-out like this: *****. Do not space words out or replace letters to avoid the word filter, even if the word was not a swear word. Please do not partially self censor words either. Spell words and website urls correctly and the filter will catch them. The same words are censored for all users, and censoring is done by a computer simply searching and replacing words.

Company names or websites that have been added to the word filter are usually companies who have repeatedly spammed PbNation.

What are smilies?

Smilies are small graphical icons which you can insert into your messages to convey an emotion or feeling, such as a joke or embarrassment. For example, if you entered a sarcastic comment, rather than type 'that was a joke', you could simply insert the purple 'dodgy' smilie.

If you have used email or internet chat systems, you will probably be familiar with the concept of smilies already. Certain combinations of text characters are converted into smilies. For example,:) is converted into a smiling face. To understand smilie codes, tilt your head to the left and look at the text: you will see that :) represents two eyes and a smiling mouth.

For a list of the smilies currently used by this forum, click here.

On occasions, you may want to prevent the text in your message being converted into smilies. You will see a checkbox which you can select when you make a new post, which will allow you to 'Disable Smilies'.

Code Buttons and Clickable Smilies

These controls allow you to quickly and easily enter vBcode into your posts and messages. To use them, simply click the appropriate buttons or select items from the lists to enter vBcode.

There are two editor modes available: Quick Reply (which appears at the bottom of the thread automatically) and Standard Reply to Thread modes. When using the Quick Reply editor, there are no vBcode buttons to assist your editing. You must enter any vBcode markup manually in this editor. After a little experience with vB code, this won't be too hard for most operations.

When using Standard mode, highlight the text you wish to modify and press the appropriate button. This will place the proper vBcode tags around the selected text. Pressing a button while not having any selected text, will insert vBcode tags at your cursor. You may then enter your text between the tags.

To use the clickable smilies, simply click the smiley that you want to insert into your message.

How do I create and vote in polls?

You may notice that some threads on this forum also include a section where you can vote on an issue or question. These threads are called 'polls' and this is how to create them:

Creating a new poll

When you post a new thread, you may have the option to also create a poll.

This function allows you to ask a question and specify a number of possible responses. Other members will then be able to vote for the response they wish, and the results of the voting will be displayed in the thread. Remember to make sure the title of the thread and the question in the poll ask the question the same way. Often users will confuse each other by phrasing the title and question differently.

An example poll might be:

What is your favorite color?

  1. Red
  2. Blue
  3. Yellow
  4. Green
  5. Sky-blue pink with yellow spots

To create a poll when you post a new thread, simply click the 'Yes! post a poll' checkbox at the bottom of the page, and set the number of possible responses you want to include.

When you click the submit button, you will be taken to the poll creation page, where you can specify the question and the list of responses you want to include.

You may also want to specify a time limit for the poll, so that (for example) it only stays open for voting for a week.

Voting in and viewing a poll

To vote in a poll, simply select which option you want to vote for, and click the [Vote!] button. You may view the current results for a poll before you vote by clicking the 'View Results' link. Voting in a poll is entirely optional. You may vote for any of the available options, or cast no vote at all.

Generally, once you have voted in a poll, you will not be able to change your vote later, so place your vote carefully!

How do I post pictures?

Step 1. Upload from your camera to your computer
Step 2. Find a hosting website like

    (Using www.tinypic.com as an example)
Step 3. Browse, select, and hit okay when after you find the image
Step 4. Hit the upload button
Step 5. Either copy the actual link, OR if the option is given, copy the link with the [IMG] tags already around it. Those tags are what allows the picture to be shown on PbNation without clicking a link.

If there are no [IMG] tags already around the image:
Step 6. Go to the PbN reply box
Step 7. Look on the toolbar and find this button , and click it or manually type [IMG] before the image and [/IMG] after the image with no spaces.
Step 8. Post the link which you copied earlier.

    It should look like:

If you are an Annual Supporting Member, there is the option of attaching photos right to posts.
Step 1. Go to the reply box
Step 2. Look under "Addition Options" and find the "Manage Attachment" button
    Step 3. Follow the popups

What are attachments?

You must be an Annual Supporting Member to use attachments on PbNation.

Attachments give you the ability to attach files of certain types to your posts. This could be an image, a text document, a zip file etc. There will be a limit to the file size of any attachments you make.

To attach a file to a new post, simply click the [Manage Attachments] button at the bottom of the post composition page, and locate the file that you want to attach from your local hard drive.

To view the contents of the attachment (if it is not already displayed) simply click the filename link that appears next to the attachment icon.

How do I embed video right into my post?

If your video is hosted on Google, Myspace, Photobucket, Tinypic, Vimeo or Youtube, you can use the [video] bbcode to embed them right in your post. Simply wrap the URL to your video in video tags so it looks like this: [video]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_Y0_Z-gKTc[/video]

What are message icons?
Message icons allow you to specify a small icon to accompany your posting, which is used to convey the emotion or content of a post at a glance. If you do not see a list of message icons when you are composing your message or post, the administrator has disabled the option.

Why can't I post about a fundraiser?

We are inundated with dozens of requests a week for permission to post fundraisers. While we support many of the causes brought to us, we are unable to allow them to be posted on PbNation for the simple fact that we can't guarantee that the money will get to the right person.

We believe most of our users have the best intentions and we often agree the cause is worthwhile, but since we have no way of monitoring the actual funds, we can't support it by allowing it on the site.

You must get approval from PbNation before posting any type of fundraiser, charity, collection or request for donations. Please use the Contact Us link at the bottom of any PbNation page to contact us before posting.

What is email notification?

If you post a new thread, or reply to an existing thread, you can choose to be notified by email when someone else replies to that thread. You can also choose to receive email notifications of new posts in a thread without posting in that thread, by clicking the 'Subscribe to this thread' link displayed in the thread page.

If you choose to stop receiving email notifications from a thread, you can turn off the option by either editing your post, or by unsubscribing from the thread here.

Only registered users may receive email notification, and they can set whether they want to receive email notification by default by editing their options.

Email notification is also referred to as 'Thread Subscription'.

Why was my post or even entire thread deleted?
There are many reasons why your thread may have been deleted. If your post violated a rule, that was the reason for the deletion. If you're not sure what rule your post violated, look through our rules and also read the stickies in the forum where you made your post. If you received an infraction or warning, that will also give you insight on why the post was deleted.

Are there any special codes/tags I can use to markup my posts?

For the most part, your posts will contain plain text, but on occasion, you may want to emphasize certain words or phrases by making them (for example) bold or italic using vB code.

The administrator has enabled smilies, which allow you to use small icons to convey emotion, and the [img] code, which allows you to add pictures to your message.

For more information about vB code and a more thorough list of how to format posts, click here.
