Use red loc-tite on the hammer shaft threads. The blue will not hold.

You can buy loc-tite at LOTS of places. Any hardware store should have it.

I usually use a vise grips with cloth around the part that your getting a grip on so you don't scratch it. I'm sure that you could do that to the shaft and have a strap wrench around the hammer to get it off. If anyone has a better way to do this feel free to post about it.

Instead of cloth, try a piece of an old leather belt. Leather is the best material to avoid scratches of the vise-grip.

While you have the hammer off, put a small o-ring on the shaft to act as a buffer between the hammer and ram body. The o-ring should fit just snugly on the shaft.

You should be able to find a small o-ring for the shaft at your local hardware store (look in the plumbing dept. Alternatively, I have a bunch that I'll be putting into the forthcoming buffer kits.

The hammer will unscrew from the shaft. Clamp it in a vise (using a leather strap or soft brass jaws) and you should be able to unscrew it more easily.

You could try removing the detent from the gun and toss it in a pot of boiling water. That should help a little. Then dry it off, douse it in WD-40 and work the detent for a bit. Dry it off again, and maybe use a dab of your favorite oil to keep it moving.

And then get yourself a MacDev ball detent - I love those things...
