Raid

Can someone please explain RAID set-ups for me? I am considering adding a new HD, most likely a 120 as my slave, and my current 40 as my primary. I could obviously use the 120 for storage mostly, predominantly for music and movies. What would be the best RAID set-up for me, and how do I go about doing it?

To set up 2 hdd's in a RAID array, they need to both be the exact same HDD, that is size, speed, etc. Then you also need a RAID controller. RAID 0 is the most popular as it sends half of all data to each HDD effectivly doubling the speed of write and read times, although in practice its only about (correct me if im wrong) a 50% gain or so. RAID 1 mirrors all data to both HDD's which is mainly for security reasons, with RAID 0 if you lose one HDD you lose both, not so with RAID 1.

not likely with a 120 and a 40. just run them by themselves.

They don't necessarily need to be the same size, it just works best that way. If one is an 80 and one is a 60, then the RAID array will only work as a 60, so 20 GB is wasted, for example.

Yeah I know...it's a waste of time to even explain.
