Possible Video Editing Program

Well I have a report at the end of the week due and I wanted to do it in the form of a video. But I don't really know how to edit videos. I would need a program? One that is fairly simple and doesn't need to be too complex. All that it would have to do was let me add music clips or sounds and have an opening, credits and scene transitions. Does anyone know of a good free, or fairly inexpensive program that I may be able to do this with. I know I have Googled it and gone to download.com. But I was just coming here for your feedback first. Thanks again, and any tips would be appreciated.

TL;DR= Looking for a low-level video editing program for a school project that is cheap(preferably free) and that is easy to learn/use.

Windows media player is easy to use and comes on most computers. It looks like videos from like the 80s though with the crappy transitions and credits but it's easy.

Is there anything perhaps a little better than that, I tried messing around with Windows Movie Maker today but I just couldn't get the sound/music to work.

No dont think so. Im trying to think of some cheap video software, most of the stuff I use it expensive >_< You could try a trial of adobe premiere pro 1.5 or studio 9.

Studio 9 is pretty easy to use, and you can get a trial.

Premiere is a bit harder, more complex. Also combustion and after effects are awesome...but thats for later.
