Need a longer barrel for a spool?

So my local awesome shop told me that I really need a long barrel on my GTEK 160R (like what comes with it - 14" I think) because the spool puts some sort of air pressure "spin" or something on the ball that causes it to arc and the long barrel flattens the trajectory.

I've read for hours on the accuracy-to-barrel math and testing and blah blah blah and I've never heard of this. Is this true?

The reason behind my question is that I want to chop my tip and make it as short as I can without affecting accuracy.

Any Ideas? Thanks/

E

What they told you is a dispelled myth, long ago disproved.

Paint is the single biggest factor when it comes to accuracy.

I cut a Freak 14in front to get it to 8 1/2in w/o any apparent loss in accuracy. Check out my post:

Most barrels don't have porting holes in the first 6-8in anyway.
Hope this helps.

I've shot my Stella with no front at all on it. Only difference it seemed to make was that it was significantly louder.

Darryl Trent used to shoot a stock 8" mini cocker barrel back in the day.
Believe it or not he swore it wasn't right until he broke paint.

naw, the longer or shorter bore thing is for open vs closed bolt guns *bolt position* anything between 7 and 9 inches for a control bore will be fine.

Also yes, your local shop is completely full of it. The only guns with backspin are Alien guns *waiting for haters, deal with it* what matters is how long the valve is open and how much pressure is used to move the ball.

as soon as the ball leaves the control bore *back* its all about sound and stability with the tip, unless the porting is WAY messed up then you will run into issues but i cant think of anyone who makes a barrel with porting bad enough to worry about.

the PE barrel systems are great, ive used a number of barrels on my gtek and while some are better than others *parabolic cough cough* nothing made in the last few years has been bad at all. I wouldnt worry about it.

The parabolic thing coming back is kinda funny.
PPS barrels were honed that way.
People used to buy brass barrels and send them in, or dingle ball hone them themselves.

when I talked to Craig he just said that they honed out a tiny section in the middle to about .001 on a solid control bore and it made a sort of "pop" that pushed the ball faster.

Yeah, irc it wasn't cheap to send your gun in to have that done.
I talked to him about it sometime in the 90's during a tournament at Mare Island.
The gist was that if you were long stroking it, and honing a big spot for a long time, you are doing it wrong.
I mean this was back when barrel hones were a regular advertised paintball need, and aftermarket barrels were not so must have yet.

Neither was having them knock in a bump into the barrel to hold a ball in a consistent place.

I'm kinda waiting for wedgits to come back.
