How to make ref shields?

We are refing this weekend, and I'd like to make some shields instead of paying $75 for those JT ones. Does anyone have any tips on making decent ones, or do all the rest of us "poor" people just use snow sleds?

thanks

I think that 1/8" plexiglass will work also. I shot a piece from close range, and it didn't crack. I am going to try to make a replica of the JT shield, but does anyone know the dimensions? thanks

The last tourny, the refs at my field fasioned some from some type of thick foam with a strap laced through it. The paintballs actually went halfway through the foam and stopped. I am used to getting hit in most places, and if you can get your hands on a bullet proof vest, you will not feel a thing.

At my field we got a bunch of those cheap made-in-vietnam round saucer sleds, and put handles on the backs. They're stronger plastic than garbage can lids, and they're pretty big.

Try reffing at my field with just a towel.

I take a good 10-20 hits to the shield every day. It'd SUCK without it.

DEBO!

I ref some rec ball a little bit and i just take the hits. I feel that if i get hit, its my fault for being in the way unless some punk with his rental Tippmann thinks hes gonna be macho and shot the ref. Thats why i tote Betsy the 14 bps cocker around to the speedball field. You see, we southern refs don't take kindly to being shot by 4 balls per second. Thats when we stop being nice and bust out the big stick of god. As for the shields, just move out the way girly man.

First if all, what is "DEBO" ?

You don't know what you're talking about. I ref at an indoor sup-air ball field, not some big grassy field somewhere in Texas. A lot of the time, you CAN'T get out of the way. Ever see 8-10 people shooting during the break, all with high end guns, in a field small enough to comfortably shoot corner to corner at 250fps? There's nowhere to hide. If there were the same bunch of 12 year olds with tippmanns at my field that play at yours, I probably wouldn't need a shield. Ever try paint checking someone without EVER getting in the way? If you're not getting hit a lot, you're not reffing close enough.

Your field sounds freaking ghetto if the refs carry around guns and shoot people. And if some hick ref referred to a '99 cocker like yours as his "14bps big stick of god" and tried to shoot me, I'd be too busy cracking up to return fire. But if I did, you'd get lit up big time.

First off, Debo is slang for verbal or physical beatdown/embarrassment.

"I ref at an indoor Sup-Air ball field."

Good for you! I ref an outdoor 'Sup Air speedball field.

I sure as hell do know what I'm talking about. Since there is only 3 active refs at my field and only 2 normally show up, its kinda hard to ref 5 players very closely.

Your right, my reffing sucks since I can't seem to watch all 5 hyper kids dukeing it out. I'm wrong for not whining about taking hits.

And yes, its possible to paint check people without getting in the way. You have them show you their area in question.

No, my field is not the ghetto. Refs use the threat of them using their markers if people intentionally shoot the refs.

As for my stick of god, its called being creative. If you could pull your head out of your *** and realize that the weekend warrior is different from that of a tournament player, you would be a lot better off.

And it pricks like you that really make me angry. You don't go around calling complete strangers hicks. Most hicks are heavily armed individuals and a paintball gun dosen't do much againts a 30-06. Therefore, don't piss off rednecks.

And my final point, I didn't even attempt to make fun of anyone. If your not tough enough to take a girly man, why do you play paintball? I didn't want to get into with with you, because that was not my intention. I posted my opinion and if that can't be respected, something here is wrong.

Thats my $0.02

If you don't want to get insulted, don't insult people in the first place.

Its a British thing. Its the their version of flicking people off. The Monty Python people do it a lot. So did Shakesphere. And don't call strangers rednecks for reasons pointed out above. Do I talk like a redneck? No...

Here you specifically identify yourself (for no good reason) as southern, which is an officially accredited reason to assume someone is a redneck.

The second comment sounds like an insult to me. I don't care what your intentions were if what comes out sounds like an insult.

If your sothern, that dosen't officially make you redneck. Thats a stupid sterotype that you think is appropriate to "point out." Shame on you.

As for the "girly man," get over it. Its that male testosterone thing. If your insulted, sorry.

And finally, the best thing for a ref shield is a large piece of plexyglass with handles screwed into it.
