I made a video on this topic, it covers a lot of the stuff you need to consider if you are going to play backyard outlaw paintball.

My house is on 5 acres with the back sloping off to a flat spot at the bottom (probably about 1 acre). I plan to make a field down there. I live in a pretty remote area tho. Not too many neighbors. Lots of tall sagebrush for natural bunkers and such.

I must say, the easiest thing i have found is to use the resources you have. Years ago me and family built a field in the woods; naturally we had to clear small trees which we used to build the bunkers. We would cut them into lengths and pile them strait up on trees. If you need to then use nails or something to keep them up. if i get around to it i will post pics.

I used to go to a junk yard an get old truck bed liners. work great like you get them or you can cut them into a custom bunker

Good stuff everybody! About three years ago I got back into paintball for the first time in about 10 years by playing some recball/woodsball on a friends small field around Thanksgiving. That's all it took, and since then we've been constructing our own field on roughly 5 acres of wooded family property.

We wanted this to be a pretty nice, functional field for various game-play styles, but we also wanted it not to become strictly a "speed-ball" course out in the woods. We were also on a pretty tight budget (gotta keep the wife happy), so first thing we did was contact a local plant in town who was more than happy to off-load some of their old pallets to us. Pallets are great. Double stack them, break them down for the boards to cover the slats, use branches and limbs to fill in the slats, nail/screw them into trees to make them more secure, the options are almost endless. We incorporated the pallets into other forts/bunkers we made using fallen trees/limbs, cleared paths/trails and dug a bunker out and made a pill-box type of structure as well. We built a tower/look-out post that becomes a hot zone pretty quickly and functions nicely as a deer stand during hunting season We also used some garage door panels that my dad had damaged and had to replace, and they are fantastic bunker builders.

All in all, it's a matter of what you want to get out of it I believe and the style of play you want. It's going to take work, but that's part of the fun seeing it all come together.

personally i say its more of a sport if your playing in woods and you just use natural bunkers like trees and stuff...but also (and i dont know why no one's said this before i think its a great bunker) CARPET can be stapled or nailed to trees. i dont know about you but in my neighborhood someones always throwing out carpet. so anyways you can put it between two trees...or three works good too...or you can make it between two trees like 10 feet above the ground if you have a latter that goes up a tree or a little platform. its real versatil an free!

Build or buy bunkers?

If i wanted to build my own rec field, should i look for used bunkers or should i build my own? If i buy how much would it be to buy bunkers? And if i build my own, which material is the best that has held-up the longest?
