Should leagues release layouts in advance?

Should paintball leagues release layouts in advance?

If so, how far in advance should they release them?

If layouts are secret, should there be more than one at the event? Should teams be allowed to imitate the layout and practice off site before their games?

Conceptually I like the idea of them being kept secret. Realistically, there will be leaks and those with money who the league seems to favor will be given a bigger advantage.

I don't think so. Keeping it a secret won't allow teams to master all the lanes and bounce shots so they can lock down the field from the back bunkers. Will result in more exciting paintball IMO.

absolutely secret. Releasing it early benefits the top budget teams the most.

Did everyone forget that the PSP did this exact thing a few years back?

I mean... at the pro level I bet that they'd have all of the lanes and bounce shots figured out after the layout leaked the day before and through a solid day of competition and light scouting.

and IronyUSA is completely right in saying that *certain* teams WILL get the layout in advance. Either if they pay money or if their coaches/owners are high up in the chain.

Keep is secret and change it during the tournament like Sunday is a modified layout.

On the topic of layouts they should do a fan submitted layout contest to see what fans can come up with.

What was the reason for switching releasing layouts a month in advance, to 2 weeks before? Was that goal accomplished?

Layouts need to be played beforehand not only as a service for the players but also to test for unforeseen problems (2016 cleveland for example)

What impact will blind layouts have at the local level? Will attendance at tournament fields drop because there will be fewer teams grinding it out on the layout before an event?

After thinking for a second, the ONLY way that this could work is if they did the "pro vs divisional" layouts like they did in the PSP.

So the divisional peeps get advanced notice. No prob.

For the pros they should do the following:
  1. Create 10 - 15 proposed layouts by at least 3-4 SEPARATE people.
  2. Nobody knows what each other has (in theory)
  3. Combine them the day of the event
  4. Number them 1 - n
  5. Get n lotto balls
  6. Do the lotto the DAY OF the event. Like, that morning an hour or so before play starts.
  7. Put the layout out

To do this the day of, the NXL would simply need to do like Japan and have every single ref and organizer move and stake the bunkers.

If organized correctly (All M-Doritos in a pile, each ref has a specific job, etc) it could be done really quickly and still allow time for the pros to walk it before games started.

That solves all of the problems.

Doesn't matter if some layouts leak because it's not the whole set & nobody knows what they layout will be until the day of.

Release the lay out before hand.
Because if you don't, it will give the conspiracy trollers more excuses to blame impact/bart/dave bains for winning.

1. No, do not release them.
2. Keep them secret until the field is physically setup, as close to the event start time as practical.
3. Multiple fields = multiple setups.

And you didn't ask, but I'll say it anyway, limited paint format.

Paint sales !!!

Layouts are released early to help fields stay in business. We shoot much more paint when the layout is released prior and our local fields all hold big practice sessions for teams. We average 40 cases a day the two weekends when the layout comes out.

Couldn't agree more. I'd love the layout to be a surprise but you know it will be leaked. Maybe not even intentionally, but it will leak.

For literally one event. Then they folded. And it was only for pros. Not exactly much a trial run.

You forget that there are lots of ways to make sure the layout is randomly chosen the first day of set up.

Plus, players don't stay on teams forever. The first person who gets cut or gets a better offer would blab. Not to mention - everyone has a video camera in their pocket now.

Yeah conspiracy theorists will be here no matter what.

Realistically you can keep the layout secret until Thursday as you are setting up. I think that is enough of a secret to make it interesting to play.

if the layouts are kept secret i can see it already.....LAYOUTGATE

now that i've got that out of the way, i'm totally in favor of keeping layouts a secret up until the event. i know it's a very multifaceted issue, and releasing them early absolutely helps out local fields. i like the thought of releasing layouts a,b,c,d,e a set time before the event and randomly selecting one the morning of practices. the league could specify that semi-pro, d1, and d2 will be playing on layout b while d3,4,5 are playing on layout e.

just a thought, but what the hell do i know anyway

Sheesh, half the people voting probably don't even play NXL, assuming that's the main league we're talking about here.

Think it's a great idea for local and regionals, but the host fields LOVE setting up "release weekends" where the only place to play the layout is at the venue the weekend before, and drag all the teams out since it's the only way to play the layout beforehand.
