Planet Eclipse "25 Years In The Game" - throwback to when the first pros shot the EGO

That's right sports fans, our blog series celebrating Planet Eclipse's 25 Years In The game has been updated with post #03 - I know, we've been slacking a little - but it's a good one. Make sure you read up on what you've been missing here: Eclipse HQ Blog

We've decided NOT to have the whole series in chronological order and mix things up to keep it more interesting, plus, who doesn't wanna hear about when we signed XSV as our first top tier US team to shoot the EGO?

Quote:
For years we'd been creating custom add-on kits for other company's markers. We'd designed our own custom versions of the industry's most popular markers to make them cooler and better and we even created amazing electro upgrades for mech markers to make them perform at incredible levels, but we'll go deeper into all of these milestones later in the series.

In 2004 we were finalising the development of something which defined us. Something that changed our path forever.

That something was the EGO. Our very first paintball marker that was designed and built from the ground up, by us. But we needed something else to help us show the world just how good it was.

"Our job is to give our teams the best possible tools to do the job, and that's what still drives us today." - Ledz (HMFIC Planet Eclipse)

We approached Rich Telford at the 2004 NPPL Denver event to see if he'd be interested in signing Team XSV up as a Planet Eclipse team and to be THE team to be associated with EGO. We already had a great relationship with the XSV crew and a few of them already shot our E-Blade cockers but we wanted them to completely switch to all EGOs. Now, pitching the EGO should have been easy. We'd designed, built and tested it and knew how awesome it was but the project was so Top Secret we couldn't risk anyone seeing it. So we didn't have anything to show the team. Not even a picture. They had to take our word for it and commit to using the EGOs blind. Which we knew was a big ask.

We still don't know who's silky smooth charm offensive made the difference or whether our reputation for being honest, genuine good guys who worked our ***** off to make great products helped out (we still work hard to maintain this to this day) but Rich and the XSV crew agreed and went into 2005 as our first top tier sponsored team in the US, promoting and using our first ever wholly owned Eclipse paintball marker.

This was MASSIVE for us. XSV was a new team made up of popular and well established players from some of the biggest teams around, so they knew their stuff and for them to agree to use our new piece of kit was the ultimate seal of approval.

The partnership was perfect. XSV really hit the ground running and were a thorn in every team's side as they challenged hard at every event. They helped show off the EGO and what it was capable of in the right hands and we in turn promoted (hard) the EGO AND XSV, so it was a win-win all round. Being part of the growth of XSV and for them to be an integral part of the development of the EGO and it's popularity was an amazing time and meant a lot to us (and still does). XSV helped us as a company to focus on making the EGO better while they generated the hype for us and the marker on the field, with their trademark approach to going hard. Every, single, point. Without letting up.

"I look back on the creation of XSV, stepping out on our own and how that was an awesome, crazy and exhilarating time. At the same time Eclipse was coming out with the first EGO. Honestly it couldn't have been a better match for a team and company destined for greatness to have each other's back in an effort to make a mark on the paintball world, that would never be forgotten. As an individual I couldn't have been more honored to have been with Eclipse at the start of the EGO's legend!" - Thomas Taylor (XSV/Infamous)

Even when teams are no longer in our stable we still see them as family and although it saddened us to see the team finally bow out of the pro game we are happy to see the XSV program up and running again in the Divisional ranks. We're proud to say that we support the new wave XSV program and hopefully we'll see them back in the top flight going toe-to-toe with the best.

And still shooting Eclipse markers, of course.

We'd like to thank everyone who played for XSV at that special time and who helped us build the legend of the EGO. We'd also like to wish the new generation of XSV players all the best of luck going forward.

And yes. The next post will be all about our first. The EGO.

Pop over to the blog, give it a read, give it a share and why not go old school and drop a comment in there.

Good read. I remember ordering my ego sight unseen from my local shop in the logic that the E-Blade was so awesome that a whole marker if that was going to be great.

XSV shooting it really gave it some extra presence too.

I still have an 05 today. Really still a remarkable marker.

Man, I still remember the first Ego I ever saw. It was on display in the Eclipse booth at the last NPPL of the year in 2004. I remember seeing one of the XSV guys carrying one out to a field (either to test fire it or for a photo shoot) later that same day so it must have really been love at first sight!

I got mine in November 04 and the first time I took it to the field the field owner told me that they weren't any good and blah blah blah. I looked at him like he had two heads and 6 months later when it was clear what the Ego was, I gave him his share of grief.

As for the marker, it put everything else in my bag in mothballs for a long time.

The good ole days. I miss mine, but not the chopping. I'm glad that issue has been fixed by every manufacturer.

Custom anno gloss red with black parts. I had to have the Tadao Night Rider board too. So sick. Memories.

Did Matty have a personal sponsorship with WGP? I remember he always was shooting a Karni instead of the EGO, but I don't ever remember seeing any marketing pushing that he shot them either.

I remember seeing the Ego before they were announced or shown to the public. Nexus used to train at my local site where I worked at the time and at a training session they had a few for testing. I'm pretty sure what I saw didn't have the final milling but I remember being really impressed with how quality it felt at the time compared to most other markers there were.

Thanks for the write up!

I didn't have much exposure to paintball before 2007, but the Ego was the first electro I ever truely wanted. I knew a guy with a tricked out 06 and was blown away by the speed, loved the pop it made and design of the body.

He was probably testing the latest firmware, we were still writing it in a porta-cabin full of stock at the back of the booth.

I first got interested in the Ego when I first saw a Dark Ego6 in a magazine. In January of 2008 I bought my first ego and a Dark Ego none the less.

I slowly upgraded it over the time I owned it with newer style parts from head to toe including going with dust parts instead of gloss. It has a Cure4 bolt, Shaft4 kit, pops asa, violent sl3 reg, violent scythe trigger, violent thumb wheel and blackout screw kit. . I'm very picky about ano matching, but I think it looked good for not being boughts I bought for it.

I then sold it to Ed Poormam who owns it now. It was and is a great market in function and form. I'm glad he has owns it of all people, but I do miss it as I do a lot of other markers. I just loved the PL milling it was so intricate and appealing, not to mention that was the easiest marker for me to sustain 15bps in semi with no bounce I believe due to it being a opto sensor only, it also was really reliable and consistent.

I remember when I first started playing in 07, someone in my field has an xsv sl66 and I absolutely fell in love with it at first sight. He let me use it and have been a eclipse fanboy ever since. Ironically today I got an Ice Cuba SL66 and I absolutely love it.
