Post Oliver Lang is retiring from professional paintball

I spoke to Oliver Lang and asked flat out if he intended to play in the NXL this year or if he'd be playing at all anywhere. He succinctly put it how only he could:

"Nope, I'm done playing my friend. On to the next chapter of life, it's thrilling and terrifying at the same time but I feel alive and fully supported to roll into my next phase of human development." - Oliver "Ollie" Lang

Oliver has been rightfully recognized as one of the best paintball players in the world since he played his first national tournament with the Ironmen at Mardi Gras back in 2000. He not only proved himself as a starter, he dominated the final game with a far Dorito breakout, by shooting the Image player who tried to bunker him out and eliminating most of the opposing team. Ollie was literally on the back line by himself before his teammates even knew the game was over. He entered the tournament not knowing how much game time he'd receive and ended it the hero of the finals and a champion. The Ironmen went on to win not only the NPPL 10-man series that year, they also won the coveted World Cup.

He later joined his friends from his Amateur team, the Ironkids, on Dynasty at the end of 2001 fresh off their first pro 10-man win. Dynasty faced the Ironmen in their first NPPL event in LA on Sunday for what would prove to be another legendary game. Early in the game, Oliver ran through on his mirror in the center and went undetected almost to the Ironmen's back line. He ended up falling down and recovering continuing to shoot out unsuspecting Ironmen players until he literally was on the opposite side of his friend and former teammate Yosh Rau's bunker. Yosh and Oliver traded but the damage was done and the Ironmen were defeated. Rodney Squires of Dynasty even turned to the crowd and yelled, "What happened? How did we win?" as he jogged down the field unsure of what transpired since it happened so fast.

Oliver and helped Dynasty win an unprecedented number of professional paintball tournaments here in the US and abroad. His first run with Dynasty culminated with their dominant performance at the Miami NPPL in 2005 which was later televised on ESPN.

Oliver shocked the paintball world by quitting Dynasty in early 2006 and rejoining his first professional team, the LA Ironmen before the first event of the year. Oliver stayed with the Ironmen through several incredible seasons winning back to back World Cups in 2007 and 2008.

Ollie rejoined Dynasty in early 2011 after his 5 year contract with the Ironmen was up. Planet Eclipse chronicled his return to Dynasty with their amazing "Coming Home" video you can watch below in its entirety.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eriEmErIE1A

Oliver took off the 2015 season and only played paintball a handful of times - all overseas but one. Oliver returned to Dynasty for the NXL World Cup. Planet Eclipse once again was on hand to record the end of Dynasty's unbelievable 15 year run winning a professional event every year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_badU3_3B7s

You can watch the full final NXL match here. It has one of the most amazing final seconds ever in professional paintball:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWnLo7_GfbU

What is your favorite memory of Oliver Lang's long and distinguished playing career? This terribly quality clip from ESPN is one of mine. It shows one of Oliver's best recorded moves and also one of his best strengths: his ability to read the field, understand the opposition and fill from a middle spot into becoming the furthermost forward attacker in seconds:

Not entirely unexpected since he's been playing at a high level for a very long time, but still a bit surprising. Hopefully the rest of the Dynasty crew had some heads up on Oliver's decision.

Sad to see him go. Him and Dynasty have contributed a lot to the progression of the tournament seen over the years.

Always loved watching him play even back in the early days. Definitely made a huge contribution to the sport. Wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.

Holy ****ing ****. I knew he was taking time off but wtf. He's retiring? Damn, what a great guy to watch. And it sounds like he's done for good when he says "onto the next chapter". Best of luck to the crazy ****er. I'm sure he'll do well.

I don't think he owns the sub place anymore?

And he didn't retire in 2015. He fell off the map! Chris Dilts made this image back then:

Here's a picture of Oliver with Dave "Opie" Thomas of Image at his first professional paintball event with the Ironmen. The Ironmen defeated Image in the finals to win.

He inspired a generation of players. Back when I started playing in the early-mid 2000s Ollie was like Michael Jordan in his second three peat the way people talked about him.

His style was also hugely influential. Read the field, play contained with awareness and opportunism. Ollie could be an elite defensive player but if you have him a sliver he was going full on aggressive to exploit it unlike anyone.

Welp, that's the end of an era.

I had both an Ironmen poster and a Dynasty poster hanging on my wall as a kid and always took an interest in Dynasty, and the IM actually, from day one.
