Just wondering what is better for my computer. Why have a sleep mode if you arent going to be using it for a bit?

Some people like to keep there computer running all the time and sleep mode is a energy saver. Sleep mode just shutsdown the harddrives and turns off the monitor. So if your going to use your computer later in the day you can put it sleepmode to save power, verses shutting it down.

im big into overclocking so I visit alot of forums related to computers and such, the general consensus seems to be not to turn your computer off

as you're computer runs it builds heat, as things get hot they expand, constantly heating and cooling can lead to things getting loose

how relevant that is? i'm not sure but my box runs 24/7

Turning a hard drive off is worse than letting it run. Between the heads and the platter, when a HD is spining, there is what is called an 'air' bearing, a tiny bit of air that does not let the arm heads touch the platters, when a HD is turned off, and then on, the platters spin down and when the RPM is slow, the heads drag on the platters, which is not great for the life of the drive.

thats usually not a big problem if you dont buy the cheap hard drives. Ones like IBM last longer with 0 bad sectors because of them keeping in mind such problems.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but some OSs require to be shut down every so often or they end up locking up. Some are like everyday, others are every couple days.

IBM is currently being sued for some of their drives like the 75GXP developing bad sectors, IBM is not a great HD maker now, they used to be the best, but now I wont touch them.

And Win9x/ME OS's have a memory leak, yeah, good luck getting them to run over two weeks without a restart.
