The Largest Paintball League in World: DPL?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGYV4yPUq6w

With about 450 teams, the DPL might just be the largest paintball league in the world.

Our vision: Eventually a stadium announcer will announce the first name of a paintball player and the spectators will shout out the rest of it. Someday, this dream will come true and we will be playing in big stadiums, broadcasting live on television and giving our fans autographs. We are committed every day that paintball gets established and accepted for what it is: a modern tactical team sport.

Special thanks to PhotoMonkey for taking a break from taking photographs and making this video!

Looks awesome, surprised there isn't more buzz around this league and its players. The French run a starting line in the PSP, where are the Germans!?!?

That's a lot of teams, but there are 1,256 teams in the 2013 PSP rankings.

Like the video - wish more producers would get more out-of-game content like that.

Haha, awesome! That's more than I would have thought.

Apparently the way the DPL works is that you sign up for the whole season. But all the teams don't play all the events. They are set up so you play the local events like pro soccer.

How many teams play all 5 events in the PSP?

There are probably a few hundred who play 4 or more PSP events each year, but I'd have to do some more advanced number crunching to come up with an exact total. Even then it's probably more informative to look at players, as American players seem to bounce around teams a lot during the season while European teams have pretty much locked rosters for the season.

The most directly comparable number is probably player-events (i.e. total of weekends each player competes.)

Regardless of numbers it's really cool that DPL gets that many teams to play a full season schedule.

They are all divided into divisions of 12, so their "champions division" is called the "1. Bundesliga"

The "2. Bundesliga" is essentially semi-pro, and under that there is a "3. Bundesliga", which is equal to D1.

Below that, leagues become regional, so if you want to make it onto national level in D1, you need to win your local league first.

Promotion/relegation is year to year, throughout the divisions, all the way from Pro to the lowest local league.

Their events are 1 division (of 12) meeting up for 1 day of games at a permanent field.... they typically have 4-5 game days per season in a division.

So, these are not tournaments like we know them, they are all "game days" where 12 teams meet up to play amongst eachother, typically getting 3-4 matches in a day.

No "game day" finds a winner, they are all just games part of a large seasonal schedule.

Personally, I like it because it's cheap... but it is incredibly boring to watch, because nobody really ever plays for "the win", except maybe at the last event of the year, if 2 teams are close in the season rankings.

I'd like someone to come up with a hybrid, so that we can get to play tournament paintball cheap, but let us continue to have big paintball events with event titles to be won.

Thanks Nick!

I hated the old NXL. The whole season was a competition for seeding at World Cup and no winner until the final game of the season.

Personally after two seasons playing the DPL all I can say is that the events are boring 40% of the time and sometimes a bit crappy. Everything below the Regional division is FPO (DPL branded Drauxxus paint that is usually so old or has been stored incorrectly that the quality is sub standard for the prices that they charge). Some events in your region see so few teams that you land up travelling to an event to play 3 or 4 RaceTo-2 games. But it does have its plus points, they have a huge 3man following and cater really nicely for those starting off in the sport with loads of fields that have bought into the 3man format (haven't played it, but have watched it a few times)

The only real alternative was the XPSL and that started seeing less and less action over the years. Played one season of the XPSL and it was a better deal than the DPL to be honest.

But there is hope in the form of the X-Series, hopefully we will play it next year.

"modern tactical team sport" should be the new action sports motto of paintball, at least competitive styles of paintball (UWL, speedball, etc). Certainly sounds pretty f***ing cool.
