Is the Blackphone just a gimmick?

Or is it legitimately as secure as they claim?

Not sure what they're claiming. watched their promo vid and I'm just more confused.

They spend a lot of time talking about how their phone is all about privacy, and I would agree that most android devices are not user or privacy focused (looking at you uninstallable Sprint Nascar app).

That said, Apple's iOS is already a fairly user and privacy focused device. FaceTime/Messages data is encrypted over Apple's servers. So is iCloud. Their source code is proprietary and a trade secret unlike Android so I'd wager Blackphone having their core based around android could be susceptible to some Android related vulnerabilities. They encrypt data but again, iOS already does this.

Blackberry may be fairly secure too, but I only know about iOS b/c I've had to develop apps for the platform in the past.

TLDR no such thing as legitimately secure.

Lol.

1 - Apple sells their statistics to the government just like Microsoft and Google.

2 - Tha Nascar app is removed by simply rooting. It has nothing to do with Android and everything to do with the wireless provider and their guaranteed contracts with other companies who pay to promote via mobile integration.

1) Sells? Are you sure that's the word you're looking for.

2) If the plan to get rid of an app involves rooting, you're not builder a User focused device in my opinion. Especially if the app is something so stupid as the Sprint Nascar app (shakes fist).

I'm not familiar with what plan they have to separate their wireless carrier system from government oversight, but I'm very skeptical that they're going to provide a much more secure or more privacy minded system than what's currently being used by major carriers.
