Nelspot 707. Almost half a century old and still shoots like it was new.

Beyond vintage, we have Antique.

Most well versed paintballers know the gun used in the first official paintball game in 1981 was the Nelspot 007, but many are not aware that the concept of firing a ball of paint out of an air gun to mark something was quite old by then, used to mark trees and livestock since the mid 60's. The 007 was Nelson's SECOND paintball gun. Their first was the Nelspot 707, one of which I have recently aquired...

Sort of a double bolt action. You open the top bolt, tilt the gun to the side to drop a ball from the side tube into the barrel, then close the bolt. Then you pull on a knob on the back of the gun to cock it. It clicks three times, each click being a subsequently higher velocity.

The red and yellow flecks are splatter from OIL based paint, and can't be wiped off. No, I will NOT be attacking this beauty with paint thinner.

The scratches by the front 12 gram knob are from the original owner. He was a cattle buyer from Winona, MN who bought the gun new around 1965. He carried it in the field for 20+ years, using it to mark cattle for purchase. In his later years he couldn't unscrew the knob by hand anymore, so he'd occasionally use a pair of pliers. I don't really consider this damage, it's just part of the gun's character. It was a tool, used for a job.

Now he couldn't just slip this bad boy in his pocket, so he had to carry it in something more practical...

...yep, the original leather holster.

They cattle buyer's grandson eventually inherited it, and over the next 3 decades or so would occasionally pull it out to shoot in the back yard, maybe scare a rabbit out of the garden. Until eventually, he sold it to me.

And the usual final question, does it still shoot?

My friend, in your possession is the mother of all that is paintball today. You have the beginning of an entire sport and community in your possession, I have no doubt you will take care of this cornerstone piece of paintball history.

Nice looking 707! 707s are awesomely old school. Few have heard about them, but yup, they were the predecessor to our whole sport! Have you played with it yet?

[checking clock] I literally bought it 5 hours ago, so no chance to use it yet, other than a little backyard practice.
I might get a chance tomorrow if the weather holds out, I really don't want to take an antique blued steel gun out in the rain. Plus the last click on the cocking knob seems to shoot the ball at "holy crap" speed, so they might not let me.

Speaking of "holy crap", is that NEW IN BOX?!?

Though the different grips and bolt knob are interesting. Must be minor changes from batch to batch. I wonder which one of ours is older?

Nice! It looks to be in really good shape. No cracks on the white spacer or anything! Many of these had complete breaks in that spacer. You should totally use it at a field when you get a chance. No one ever knows what it is, and when you nail someone with it, it's just SO satisfying.

Mine isn't new in box, but is in great condition. It came from a barn estate sale. What's the serial number on yours? I'll check the serial number on mine when I can get to it on Tuesday. I think the grips on yours are an upgrade, but I think the nobs are the same, yours just has a flathead groove milled in. Someone with more expertise want to chime in?

I can't find a serial number on mine, which I think is normal for Crosman made guns of that era (oh yeah, forgot to mention for everyone else, Crosman made these for Nelson, based on the Crosman model 150 pellet gun).

And I think the expert pool on this gun is quite small.

There was this guide written a ways back...

...made by someone who goes by Vern1 here, though it looks like he doesn't come on much (hopefully he'll see this thread and chime in).

I've always wanted one of those...

Years ago, the local hobby shop/paintball store got some stuff from his dealer, that was being closed out/discounted/obsoleted, etc.

One tidbit was a VHS video called something like "Big Game '94". It was a somewhat professionally done video of a big event at some large field, the specifics of which I can't recall.

But it featured a host of 'celebrities', including Oh Pawlak (who, in one scene, was seen yelling [tongue in cheek] "Stop shooting at me! Don't you know who I am?" ) and Danny somebody or other from the Iron Men (shooting a Sniper.)

We got a kick out of looking at the action and the equipment, some of which we'd only seen in magazine ads at that point.

Except there was one scene we just couldn't figure out. This one fellow, surrounded by people with flashier guns, was holding something that at the time we thought was a modified PGP, or possibly a modified PG (side tube) pistol. The motion he went through to load a ball was odd, and it puzzled us for weeks.

It wasn't until literally years later, that I saw a 707 (online, still haven't seen one in person) that it became clear that's what it was, because two of the things that confused us was the rifle type front sight and the "barrel clamp".

Maybe I should just build myself one out of an old PGP or something...

Doc.

For some reason I want to try yelling that tomorrow, just to see what happens.

It definitely feels odd, like the bolt and feed tube should be on opposite sides for a right handed shooter.

That site I linked has all the parts diagrams, it's definitely PGP'ish inside (or, well, technically the other way around).
http://www.pettypb.com/707/index2.htm

And a little blooper reel from my test firing. I tried shooting at that foam deer archery target (I didn't have a cow near by ), and things didn't go as planned....

Sounds like the "Celebrity Big Game" from here in St Louis. Darryl Trent and others would come out and goof off.

It was indeed, I just went and looked in a box of old VHS cassettes I hadn't opened yet this century.

"Paintball World Video, National Pro Shop's Celebrity Big Game III"

The cassette says '1994 Celebrity Big Game III', and the small text says:
"In 1992, Darryl Trent won. In 1993, Fred Schultz won. This year they're back in St. Louis for the grudge match. Relive the excitement of the big game with your favorite pro players, manufacturers, and celebrities."

I also found a "Corporate Paintball Video", which I think was an APL promotional thing- you handed it out to companies whom you wanted to come out to your field. I also discovered a tape we made back when ESPN broadcast those early made-for-TV games with the Parapalegic Turtles and whatnot.

I suppose I need to start checking the secondhand stores for a working VCR. And maybe a TV...
