Backup gun for friends

Hey nation. So I always want to get my friends out to play but most of the rental equipment doesn't really make it fun for them. I have an extra hopper (halo too) and a 3k tank. What are some low to mid range guns I could pick up for $150 or less for the future. That way they get to have some fun and experience paintball and maybe get hooked! I was thinking about an Ion but I've heard that sometimes they get tricky and have no safety. Let me know what your suggestions are. I'm not looking to buy right now just get an idea!

You can find Mini's for $150 and under. That would be a great borrower.

What about giving them a different mask?

I find the mask to be more problematic to renters than the marker itself.

That's true... If I pick up one for myself I'll probably give them my proflex. That's a good point too. :tups:

No electronic gun has a "safety". Just turn it off while not on the field

That's what I meant. I have a teammate that either had chubby fingers or something. He always seems to shoot his off with the cover on all the time.

I would suggest the Dangerous Power G4. I have seen them used for as little as 160 or so. IMO - an overall better gun with more features than the Mini. I have the G4 and love it. I'm planning on picking up a second one, or maybe a G5 this winter when prices are likely to drop.

As with any used gun, you will probably want to replace all the O-rings once you get it, clean and lube it well, then play with it some yourself to make sure its working as well as it should.

I have two g5's and love them. But your price estimate is a bit high
Lately I have seen g5's go for $150-210.
g4's have been going for $100-130.

I was actually going to suggest a DP over the mini but I will not suggest anything but a G5 and it is above his budget.
The G4 just has too many issues and they fixed all of them with the g5.
Plus its macroless as well.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I had my bachelor party for paintball and all of my groomsmen had to cancel...so they kind of owe me. Hopefully I can get them out in the future and make them want to come back!

The options listed above. If youre feeling a bit richer grab an ETHA or AXE.

I run an axe now so a cheap mini might be helpful. I would be used to it. Thanks a lot guys.

My loaners Are a geo 2.1 and a g6r. Both great guns and I never have to fiddle with the geo. Just air up and go.

But with your price range id go for a mini. Or an Etha. Stay away from the g3's

Best to stick with what you're already familiar with.Always good to have something you're used to in case your primary goes down.
I'd recommend getting a 2nd mask 1st also, rental mask can kill a game day for any new player plus if you're playing by yourself you can rotate masks between games to help with fogging issues
Nowadays it's almost hard to get a bad gun.Easier to list guns NOT to buy
These are guns I'd stay away from
DP-Maybe theyve improved with the G5 as mentioned.Never seen one that's reliable myself
PMR-For the price much better guns out there.Need more maintenance than most spoolies
Spyders-Hit or miss.Some are good,some are horrible
Proto SLG-Dyes b@stars child they wish they could forget
Gen 1 Ion-My personal favorite, don't recommend them as the maintenance is difficult if you're not familiar with them. The BOB(Bolt out Back) versions including the XE and most GoGs are much easier to maintain
Anything old& oddball.Angels,Autococker,Automags-While these three are great guns you'll need to know how to maintain them, parts can be hard to find unless you know where to look.Oddball stuff includes anything that isnt mass produced. While there's some gems out there that aren't common customer support, parts and service can be difficult
Good luck with your search

I currently run an axe so the minis would be a good bet for me. I want to be able to give them something I PERSONALLY can work on for them if need be. I was already going to pick up another proflex just for that reason. Just haven't gotten around to it. I see them for fairly cheap on here. Man I love pbnation. You guys are really helpful in everything and I'm glad I found this site. Thanks!

the mini sounds like it would be your best bet. don't weigh out any of the gog gun as well as some dp is acceptable i am not a fan but they are decent. you can probably snag an etek, gen 3 timmy, shockers are always in that range if you dig a bit. a lot of options are open to you just look around and see what you like

The best advice I can give is get something that is reliable and easy to maintain. This is why I like Tippmanns and Spyders for "loaner" gear. Real simple to clean and diagnose if something goes wrong.

I like guns like this because genearlly the less complicated it is, the less you're going to have to be spending time with a new player trying to figure out what happened to cause the marker not to work. This is going to frustrate the both of you on game day. Also, after the day of play is over, you're going to be cleaning the gear and since most people I know don't like to clean all that much, something that is easy to clean up and get ready for next time probably is a good choice.

Now if you want a gun that also is easy to keep in tip top shape, I would take Tippmann off the list. While it will always work, it may take a bit more time to tear down and creally clean up well to keep it shooting it's best. I have an A5 for my loaner/backup and when I loan it out it is usually to a newer player whose skills aren't even close to the marker's ability so putting a higher quality marker in their hands wouldn't make a difference for them. If I had people that came out regularly to play or had come out a few times already, I'd either have a nicer gun for those times or I'd let them play a couple games with my DAM to see the difference a nicer marker makes.

I would definitely get a new mask first. Rental masks will ruin the day.

The Mini (or another Axe) is going to be nice since you already know how to tech it.

I actually went the opposite route for my loaners and picked up a couple Ion's, as I had never used them or spoolies before I wanted to learn to tech them.
