Wild Life and Paintball

Last Sunday I was playing at my home field - TommyGuns Paint Wars by Mankato, MN. They have several fields going from speedball to woodsball. The speedball field is right next to a field we just simply call the grass field, only separated by the net. The grass field is fairly large with just long grass (think road ditch type) and has plywood sheets for bunkers. We had played through this once and switched sides.

About 30 seconds into the second round, 2 fawns (you know - baby deer) jumped up from the middle of the field and ran off. Everyone (about 10 total) stopped shooting and just watched in amazement as these two fawns ran off the field. The craziest thing was that these fawns had sat through the first round and people must have run past, maybe even covered behind a bunker within just a few feet of them.

It was an awesome sight and one we laughed about for the rest of the day. In case you are wondering - no one shot at the fawns!

I have had it happen where I was surprised by a squirrel and almost lit him up before I realized it wasn't an opponent. Another time, I was covered behind a tree and saw a little field mouse digging through the matted grass right beside me.

Playing paintball is one of the greatest experiences. Even so, I will still take the time to admire the beauty of nature around me while I'm playing!

Anyone else have any wildlife stories?

A snake crawled over my leg as I was laying low in a small bunker for a while. The goal was to wait until the other team forgot how far I made it up the woodsball field. It was a rat snake, so I didn't even twitch.

Haha, wow. I can't beat the deer video.

I do appreciate that none of these stories involve shooting at wildlife.

I'm not too far from the original poster, so deer aren't an uncommon site at the local fields. When I worked at a field in Baldwin, WI it was pretty common for a player to get the crap scared out of them when wild turkeys would sudden sprout from the underbrush.

Though the weirdest would be when I lived down in Illinois. There was an emu farm about a quarter mile from one of the fields. One of those 6ft high flightless mega birds managed to escape... and pecked a player on the behind while he was crawling through the underbrush. At first I think he though he was hit by a ball, until he turned around and saw this...

...and then his screams scared it off.

LOL.

Giant bird attacking me during play? For sure as hell I'd be screaming, too.

We had a old hound dog start barking at us and was giving positions away. Funniest thing was to follow the dog. He would lead me right to you.

Back at Pevs Paintball there was a Cow field next to the field called Compound. One day the cow got passed the gate and there was a huge river in the middle of Compound. Calmly for the next 15 minutes the cow drank from the river as a massive paintball war was battled out from each side of the river

The deer video while cool is still scary because if you touch a fawn in the wild, the doe will leave it to fend for it's self and in most cases it will die. If you ever see a fawn please don't touch it and just call your local game and fish agency for further instructions.

Found this little bugger during a game. Our field is right next to a skeet range which they shoot into marshland which is probably where this guy came from so we just took him back there and released him.

This advice is false. Most of the advice about wildlife and touching them is meant to stop children from touching and breaking baby animals. The most common example is baby birds. A mother bird WILL come back and care for a baby bird that has been touched or a nest that has been touched. In fact if you see a baby bird on the ground under the nest the best thing to do is watch it to see if it fell out or is just learning to fly. When you decide it has fallen out you can place it back in the nest with no issues.

Back at the 2nd BCBG field in Hanover we had a rabid racoon. We had to clear the field and remove it for play resumed.

Not exactly while playing but some guys and I were rearranging our field and pulled up a bunker only to find a 4 foot Cottonmouth coiled up underneath it along with several babies. Just kind of said "nope" and called it a day.

Didn't some one from Alaska post a video where a bear crashed a paintball match not to long ago?

I saw a deer in the middle of a firefight at PBC Greensboro. I was firing at a fort and looked to my right, and saw a doe just staring at me. There were people shooting everywhere and i was amazed that she wasn't scared. She eventually ran off

My advice is actually correct, I am a wildlife biologist. Your argument does have a good point as well but deer will very very rarely take back a fawn that has been touched by humans
