Finally after about a year and half of build and development I have finished what is likely the first paintball UGCV. This was wall self funded and built, down to the machined parts and any and all electronic development. As of right now it is still in the beta stage; after our first live combat outing we have come to the conclusions some tweaks will be needed. Mostly the turret will need to be slowed down, and the turret shell needs to be thicker.... it now looks like hell. It is only .030 aluminum I didn't expect it to survive but I had to use it for the sake of how cool it looks.
Here is the fun parts...... It all started in March 2013 when I spied a craigslist add for a cheap electric wheel chair with a warning of "It can no longer be used as a normal wheelchair but functions perfectly." I called the guy and found out he was/is a movie prop house car builder and was looking to make money back on a movie that bombed that he built the wheel chair for to do wheelies. The movie was called "Harold" and it is terrible.... Follow the link to see the chair.
After a quick negotiation and about four beers and another 3 hours of BS'ing about cars a price was set and it got jammed in the back of my truck and on its way home. Here is is the day it came home. We took a bunch of stuff off at the guys garage so I could get it in the back of my Xterra.
The start of frame welding.
Gen Alpha frame design.
Frame on chassis.
Turret bearing test mount on 3/8ths lexan top plate.. the bearing was a dumpster find, I have no idea what is is actually from but it was the right size and worked great.
Alpha turret and frame.
This about where is came to a screeching halt.... We couldn't get the steering to work and abandoned the project because we had a dead line we couldn't. meet. It sat this way from about May of last year till November when we picked it back up.
Starting in December the massive redesign started We have called it Gen 1 but is really is the Beta version. We whacked off the tip of the frame and made it flat. It would be easier to work with and stronger.. How much stronger? I parked my truck on it and it didn't budge. Its a brick.
Then I found a High BAy light shell so we had our turret shell test fit of what I can all fit in there.... this picture has come back to haunt us.
