Security Cameras Thread - NVR or Computer?

Anybody on the nation setup a system of security cameras?

I'm trying to decide between using a network video recorder (NVR) or using a computer to record. IP cameras vs co-axial cameras...

A lot would depend on your budget and the environment u want to record. Don't go the computer route... Go standalone nvr for ip cameras or dvr for analog cameras.

Feel free to pm me further... I'm am a system integrator and happy to give you some advice from someone that deals with this hardware daily and also has to support it when it doesn't work

Right now I'm looking at setting up just two cameras, one is a Toshiba IK-WB16A-W and the other is a D-Link DCS-5020L. I'm thinking both could record independently to a network drive like a normal Qnap TS-212P or Synology NAS drive. But I'm interested in having an alert send via email and then looking it up on an android phone. I'm still sorting through all the manuals to determine if this is possible...

I have zero first-hand experience with such things, but take a loot at ubiquiti's airVision goodies. seems like good gear and I've read good things.

but like fasted said, it all depends on budgeting.

Just installed this at a friends house- works great and you can access your DVR remotely. So far we have recorded videos of someone breaking into cars and a fedex guy backing up into my friends jeep

This.. I have 6 of the Ubiquiti IP cameras at my home. All routed to a cisco 3400 switch. They have their own web gui, and are rad little cameras. Ubiquiti get my vote too along with Promagistrate.
