Introducing a Husband and Wife Team - Monkeybutt Custom Anodizing

Introducing Monkey Butt Customs!

My Wifey and I have started up an new anodizing line and are exited to bring you our work. Jody, my wife is doing all the dying and is exceptional in her eye for color and design. What she is looking to bring to the table amazes me every day we put on our gloves and dip aluminum into color. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next! So far we have done the oldies but goodies but what she has concepted is something that I have never seen before.

Me? I'm the surface prep guy and marketer (and I also love to play with kickass looking guns!!). I work in musical instrument manufacturing as my day job and zone out to the sounds of the polishing wheel at night.. There is something beautiful, honest and pure about that polishing wheel.. I love it!

Let me know what you guys think of these!

If you are looking for an anodizing quote just click here Monkey Butt Custom Anodizing Quote Form!

Still had masking on this one.. didnt take a pic after we pulled it off... darn it. Thats what the spots are.

Same here....

My personal axe

Trying out some acid washes. Those are fun to do!

Some new colors just testing out

This one looks like chocolate in person, the blotches you see are actually clouds. That thing is polished!

The orange was tricky, but it looks fantastic in person. This is what I will do my ego in... probably orange and grey.

Like I said we are just getting started and are going to be slow on the get go, but if you have a project, let me know. We have some practice bodies and can test out your ideas as a proof of concept before you send us your work.

Thanks again all!

Great work so far! I always enjoy seeing what different anodizers come up with. Every one is different.

Looks great! Only suggestion would be to invest in a lightbox/dedicated camera setup. Getting fantastic pictures out there in a white-balanced calibrated setting is the best way to make ppl drool over anodizing.

I like the purple, lime green, orange, the purple acid, and the first red/black acid job.
Added this thread to my locker :~)

Your work looks great! I have a question though based off the pic of your axe asa/reg. Are you masking off the threads when annoing? I ask because I see the splash line go through the screw hole and I've heard a lot of anno horror stories where threads were damaged during the anno process.

No the threads aren't masked off with an anodizing like they have to be in powder coating, but the horror stories are/can be true. The issue is in stripping the ano for too long. Ano is nothing more than oxidation on aluminum that takes color. Now when you strip off the old ano you are removing that layer of oxidation plus a little bit of aluminum. Pb guns over the years have had tighter and tighter tolerances. So say you anno a gun multiple times 3-4 as I have with that impulse body and the DM bodies (practice bodies from non-functioning guns) I have effectively removed probably 2-3mm of metal from stripping. These threads look ok, but they are toast. The reg on the impulse is pretty lose and I don't think it would hold air anymore.

That being said we have worked hard to make sure that we are not stripping too long so we can prevent this from happening.

The axe however is great! I had a leak in it after assembly, but that was because I lost the spring that holds the emergency release valve in place! Rule number 1 in stripping your guns for anno people!! Don't lose anything!!

You REALLY need to be wearing a particulate breather of some sort. Aluminum dust and some of the compounds them self are both bad to breath. I would definitely not do this again.

Here is the one I use. Its light, cheap and easy to breath in.

So like I said, Jody was out of town this weekend so I got to play in the kitchen!

This first one is only cool to me because when I was doing it I wasn't happy at all. I changed direction and pulled out something that I think is pretty awesome!

Here is one style that my step-daughter's boyfriend's brother requested.. Don't worry about why this kid requested a rasta splash... he's a good guy, so is his brother... and so is my step-daughter. I also am a white guy with dreads so I don't judge as my hairstyle is voted the worst of all worlds above the mullet!

Now.. I am not going to pull the wool over your eyes on this one. There are some spots on here that I am very unhappy with in the green but..... This was the first part that I have ever sandblasted to get the dust finish. Apparently one needs to wash a part 3x with a sand blasted part vs 2x with a polish part! I am however going to put this body kit on sale because i do like it and I don't want to re-anno it and potentially ruin the body. Right now the threads are all perfect.

The spots are in your making. It wasnt dried completely before you washed it out for the black base. Just a heads up.

I like the first fade, it actually... Fades. Gradually. Its smooth.

I don't like the second fade. Its not gradual enough. Its better than many I've seen over the years, but yea. Just wanted to comment on that.

Others may be able to chip in on how to get the fade more gradual, but IMO, that's something to work on. Constructive criticism.

Not a huge fan of some of the splashes as they don't seem random enough, but each anno'er has their own style. That's just my opinion, take it how you will.

I like the rest of what I see. I can't comment on technical matters other than threading concerns.

That makes a lot of sense! I was pushing this one through much faster than the others we have done. Thanks for the heads up. Love your work by the way. Top notch!
