Those parts are Titanium - and they can be anodized straight off.

Titanium Dioxide goes on aluminum well (and SS) and is good with tolerances (very low level of coating.) The problem as a surface is like Anodizing aluminum, the lower surface (Al) is softer than the top surface, and can scratch. Titanium Dioxide is bright gold colored also. I know there are some Ti-Carbon coatings, I will look into a straight Ti-XX coating if it is in the aurora.

The process is a vapor deposit, for TiN - not sure what that will entail. Time for a bit of research.

Edit: Ti-Ni is so stupid robust that on SS or something hard you will have a very hard time scratching it. even with sandpaper, deliberately. The lower surface would fail on a paintball gun far before it.

Edit addition: (Wikipedia grab)
Quote:
titanium oxynitride is one coating surface with the iridescence, and Titanium aluminium nitride (TiAlN) or aluminium titanium nitride (AlTiN; for aluminium contents higher 50 at.%) stands for a group of metastable hard coatings consisting of the metallic elements aluminium and titanium, and nitrogen. Four important compositions (metal content 100 at.%) are deposited in industrial scale by physical vapor deposition methods

So what you're saying is that a AL-Ti-N/aurora/oil slick torque is entirely possible, probably with much less failure rate than the traditional nickel plated/ coated process? With the caveat being that any special coatings are far off into the future; after the torque takes the paintball world by storm and inspires countless knockoffs (the litmus test for any idea).

A titanium torque would be absurdly expensive, significantly heavier, and would probably require some major changes in the machining process.

I think they should just stick to aluminum and basic anodizing but what do I know.

Yes it would.

The 'Titanium' is for a vapor deposit coating, instead of the nickel plated and chromed coating.

That's what I get for briefly skimming, leaving, and coming back and responding without fully comprehending the conversation.

DOOOHHH

That makes a little more sense.

A PVD coating is how a Titanium-Nickel coating would be applied correct? Not cheap, but potentially absorbable for a high volume/batch.

The "aurora" service that many offer (and all seem to go through the same UK company) is PVD.

SO: finding a different substrate then Chrome might be the answer.

sooo many discussions about this right now.

inception forums, PbN in two different places, AO, .... Interesting how it seems to be the hot topic.

What's old is new...

It is mentioned above that most companies are having the PVD process done in the UK? Funny, because all the Aurora Eclipse Cockers, 4x4 Shockers and ICD Bushmasters we did were all done in the USA then flown back to the UK for assembly and testing.

It's more likely to find a PVD source here in the states. Getting one to work with you for the coatings is another story.

Looks like I'm going to have to try and convince Josh to hire me.
Wonder if I can get paid I Torque parts...I wouldn't mind a salary of one part/hour.

On near me took one personal project, did a bang-up job, then said "never again for less than 50 pieces"
