Proper Axe Bolt System Maintenance

Frequently Axe'd Questions

Q: Should I use a high or low pressure output compressed air tank on my Axe?
A: Axe's will work with tanks of 350-950psi output with no performance change (assuming the tank regulator is flowing properly). Ideal tank output is 400-600psi for longer life of Axe regulator seals.

Q: How do I adjust the velocity on the Axe?
A: Set the regulator to between 190-210psi. Once the regulator is set use the back cap to set velocity

Q: How many shots can the Axe get from a 68/4500psi tank?
A: Most users experience 9-11 pods = 1260-1540 shots. Results will vary based on various conditions.

Q: What circuit board does my Axe have?
A: The main circuit board is in the foregrip. You can read the label on the back of it if you remove the battery to find out which board you have. Newer Axes are coming with the Shockwave board. Older Axes have the Optimus board.

Q: How fast can the Axe shoot?
A: 20bps max in semi. 15bps in all other firing modes (Due to ASTM saftey standards)

Q: Can the ASA/Regulator be adjusted forward and backward?
A: The ASA/Regulator is in a fixed position.

Q: Is the Axe a poppet or spool valve marker?
A: The Axe is classified as a Pressure Controlled Poppet marker. A schematic and animation can be seen here: http://paintball.newkamikaze.com/scheme.php?id=11
While the Axe is idle air pressure holds the poppet valve closed. When the trigger is pulled the solenoid is opened channeling the air from behind the poppet to start moving the bolt forward. When the bolt if forward far enough the air moving the bolt is released which opens the poppet valve, firing the ball. The solenoid is then closed and a spring returns the bolt to its at rest position. The air pressure behind the poppet valve closes the valve again.

Q: What Axe parts are compatible with the Mini?
A: Bolt, Bolt Spring, Barrel, Foregrip, Main Circuit Board, ASA/Regulator, Ball Detents, Feedneck, Poppet, bottom air transfer tube

Q: What upgrades should I get for my Axe
A: The most popular upgrade for most paintball guns is the barrel because it give quick and drastic results. As for other aftermarket products its up to the user to perform the research and choose what they may want. NOTE - many of the bolt upgrades tend to be some what difficult for new users to dial in therefore we don't recommend buying a bolt for for Axe unless you are an experienced paintball marker user and you have the time/patience to properly set up the bolt.

Axe Troubleshooting

Before troubleshooting the Axe you should always install a fresh battery and perform general basic maintenance shown in this video: General Maintenance Guide

Empire recommends Dow 33 lube to be used on the Axe bolt system. Paintball Marker oil can be used in the regulator

The tips below only pertain to the stock Axe. If you have installed aftermarket parts remove them. Set the regulator to 200psi and use the back cap to adjust velocity

Service Guides
General Maintenance Guide
Empire Official Reg Service Guide Axe Pro/Mini GS/D'fender/Vanquish
Empire Official Solenoid Service Guide
Eye Cleaning Guide (Coming Soon)

Velocity Issues:

Problem: Velocity is low, inconsistent, or drops during rapid fire
Solution: Try the following
-Set Regulator pressure to 200psi. Turn the back cap all the way in and unscrew 3/4 of a turn. This should set velocity to around 290FPS. Set Dwell to 8ms.
-Lube Poppet o-ring and/or replace if necessary
-Replace large bolt guide o-rings (most critically the middle one)
-Lube small bolt guide o-rings and replace if necessary. If the bolt can drop off of the bolt guide by being shaken lightly the small bolt guide o-rings should be replaced
-Lube Bolt outer o-rings and replace if necessary
- Check regulator gauge during firing. Gauge should return to set pressure quickly If not try
-a different tank
-drop 2-5 drops of paintball marker oil to the Axe ASA/Reg and dry fire the marker
-Get the regulator serviced

Rate Of Fire Issues:

Problem: Slow or Inconsistent Rate of Fire
Solution:
Check your board settings. See the user manual (link above) before continuing.

If you have broken paint the eyes may be dirty. The eyes should be cleaned by removing the sensor board and cleaning the eyes. You can check the eye status on the main circuit board. See the user manual for eye status indication

If your eyes are clean Your bolt may be cycling too slowly. To fix this perform general maintenance as show in the service guide above. Wash the inside of the bolt and the small area of the bolt guide with water to get rid of paint residue. The small bolt guide o-rings may need to be replaced if they have swollen.

Breaking Paint:

Problem: Breaking paint in barrel and/or breech
Solution:
If balls are breaking in the barrel try re-sizing the barrel or switching paint.

If breaking balls in the breech check the following:

-Check that the ball detents are present and can move freely in the breech
-The bolt should not fall off the bolt guide when shaken . If it does replace the small bolt guide o-rings
-There is a air re-stricter valve (also known as check valve), located in the solenoid ports. If this is not installed the Axe may break paint. Check if this part is installed. See the user manual for where this piece is installed

Air Efficiency Issues:

Problem: Low Air efficiency
Solution:
Confirm an good barrel to paint match.

Perform routine maintenance on the Axe. Make sure the poppet is well greased. Set the pressure to 200psi and use the back cap to adjust velocity. The less the poppet opens the faster it can close which saves air. The back cap should not need to be more than 1 full turn out from all the way in for 300fps. If velocity is not achieved the poppet o-ring should be replaced.

The bolt should not fall off the bolt guide when shaken . If it does replace the small bolt guide o-rings

Regulator Issues:

The regulator should only be serviced by an authorized air smith. Servicing the regulator may void your warranty. Empire recommends sending the regulator to Empire Customer Service at paintballsolutions.com Should you not be able to send in the regulator a PBNation community member has made a relay regulator service guide: Relay Regulator Service Guide

Problem: Regulator pressure rises slowly as marker sits idle. Or after first shot regulator pressure doesn't return to set point in less than 1 second.
Solution: replace the regulator washer (also known as regulator seat or main seal).

Problem: Regulator pressure recharges slowly after a shot causes low velocity
after first shot.
Solution: lube and/or replace the o-rings on the large brass piston with Dow33 (not oil)

Problem: Regulator doesn't vent or takes several minutes to vent when tank is removed.
Solution: This may be because the depression pin is not moving freely. Apply oil or grease to the pin to get it to slide more easily.

Leaks:

Problem: Large leak in breech/barrel
Solution: This leak is usually caused by the solenoid being held open. With the air off turn the marker on and turn the eyes off to click the solenoid

Problem: Small leak in breech/barrel
Solution: This leak is caused by the white poppet or the bolt guide where he white poppet touches. First try replacing the white poppet. If this doesn't work you many need a new bolt guide. Contact Empire warranty service at paintballsolutions.com for a replacement.

Solenoid Issues:

Problem: Solenoid doesn't click until I pull the trigger many times or at all.
Solution:
Usually the battery just needs to be replaced or the solenoid needs to be cleaned. To clean the solenoid follow the solenoid service guide: Cleaning Axe Solenoid

Electronics Issues:

Problem : On Shockwave board when I press power button the gun flashes a bunch of colors an then the light turns off and the board doesn't do anything
Solution: Your Shockwave board is starting up in programming mode. When you hold the trigger while turning on the Shockwave board it starts programming mode where you can change settings like Fire mode or rate of fire for example. You should adust the trigger until the trigger is no longer being depressed.

Problem: With a Shockwave or Redline board the marker fires very slow with eyes on but is ok with eyes off.
Solution: This means you have an eye malfunction so the eyes are dirty or damaged or the connection from the main board to sensor board is not there. First try cleaning the eyes by removing them from the marker. Also clean the holes the eyes see through. Check the sensor board and connections for corrosion or bent pins.

Axe Tuning

There are many ways people like tune and set their Axes. Below are a few ways to do it to get your Axe the way you want.

Note - the below tuning methods are for a Stock Axe. If you are using aftermarket parts you should refer to the maker of those parts for proper tuning

Empire Factory Recommended: Best All Around Performance
The following settings are recommended by Empire to set the Axe for best all around performance. These settings give reliable consistent performance and the best balance between efficiency, kick, sound, velocity consistency and Ability to shoot Fragile paint. This is the way we set Axe's for Empire Sponsored teams.

You should follow the proper maintenance video before setting the Axe for best performance: Proper Axe Maintenance

Pressure: 200psi
Dwell - Stock (8ms)
Velocity - Use back cap, should be between 1/2 to 1 full turns out from all the way in
Paint to barrel match - Should be able to blow balls out of barrel like a blow gun.

Other Tuning Methods:
Note - The following tuning methods were developed by PBNation community members. Empire recommends if you have issues to use the above factory recommended method

Advanced Mini/Axe Tuning Guide by ironyusa various tuning methods

Smoothest Tuning Method by 98pro claims to increase efficiency and reduce kick
