?? about SP-1 , unopened, never used.

I know this sounds crazy, but I haven't played in 3 years, not read a paintball magazine, no forums, etc. I didn't know about what happened to SP till 30 mins ago, etc.

I have an unopened SP-1 that I want to break out and use this weekend for my son's first time playing. It's an early one. Are these guns still relevant? Worth the effort? Would he be better off with an A5?

SP-1 is a great solid marker. I would suggest pulling it apart and lubing the orings and only using HPA (air) and not CO2. Using air will reduce any velocity spikes which can happen with CO2 and can cause issues...There are conversion kits if you want to upgrade the SP-1 to be like the GOG G-1 I believe. But no need...The A-5 is a solid will find a huge difference from taking the A-5 apart and cleaning it tot he SP-1...

I agree that the SP1 is a great marker. It is solid and can take some abuse. I also agree to lube it and check the o-rings.

GOG makes an updated SP1 named the G1, so parts are still available.
