That first shot looks a little awkward, like her shoes are digging into the grass and she's off balance.

Second shot is solid though

Ah ya true, was trying to mix it up with a vertical shot to get the full body in the frame... Always tough taking vertical portraits, at least for me

It looks like her knees are locked, maybe if they were bent slightly..? she does look off balance. Beyond that, I'm not a fan of all the head room, 2 is great though

I hate when I don't get land photos.. Can't use this. :/

or this.

Pretty sweet setup!

dan, i'm sure your's is similar to the ones they use to train tank crews? but, obviously, for planes.
It looking like a car makes it awesome! Ours is split, recreates the front half of the plane with a 3d view outside, and has the back end in a separate room (where I sit). It has some seriously intense software to create the world below for our training use for mission sets. It's a multimillion dollar system.

For the uninitiated, those red streaks on the left are sprites. Just trying to capture those alone on a DSLR could take you forever. The fact that they're in the same frame as the aurora and lightning is just remarkable.
Sick.

Oh ya without a doubt yours is cooler haha I wouldn't even know how to use the flight sim. But it's pretty nuts because it's on hydraulics to simulate movement and turbulence.

Debating whether I want to go to WWII weekend this week. The crowds are terrible.

You can't slay bodies in the primary without backup irons.

Ted, awesome dirt track shots. I'd love to do roundy round stuff, but the gang that does it around here is super territorial, terrible, and won't let anyone that might be better in.

Thanks, I was just about to post some of them here. I'm very lucky in that my stepfather flies the plane owned by the track owner and his brother. I even got to fly up there with them this time, 25 minutes each way in the cockpit of a King Air 350 rather than a two hour drive to Jamaica, Virginia. While I'm not much of a circle track person, those races at VMS can be pretty fun, especially since I get infield access. The track photographers are pretty cool and don't bother me at all thankfully.

Some things I learned yesterday:
  • General aviation is the best way in the world to fly.
  • There is no room in a King Air cockpit for a D700.
  • If there was, I'd seriously be in need of a fisheye.
  • Fluffy, innocent looking clouds are NOT innocent.
  • An iPhone will put itself in video mode at all the wrong times.
  • Panning shots are HARD, even with a 70-200 in VR panning mode.

And now for some select shots:

You're better at panning than me, that's for sure.

I need serious practice

I don't know if I'd go that far. I didn't count, but I would estimate I shot close to 600 frames panning and got maybe 30 or so usable shots, further reduced by eliminating multiples of the same car. Might have been easier had I brought my monopod, but I had to travel quick and light out of courtesy to the good people paying for the jet-A fuel that the King Air loves to guzzle.

In all, I felt more lucky than good. I'll take lucky, but is rather be good.

Ted, I may have said it before, but I love how almost every picture you take has the same tone to it. It's a real pleasing look to me.

Glad to hear its appreciated. Thankfully I managed to get off that split toning kick I was on most of last year, it doesn't translate as well to the images produced by my Nikons.

Looking to try and do more people stuff this year, as well as more motorsports if I can get the opportunities. My main goal with people is to shoot more directed images and less candids, get myself out of the comfort zone a little. Now that I have some good portrait lenses and some location lighting, I've run out if excuses to give myself not to do it.

If you don't mind me asking, what are you doing to get the tones/contrast you do?

Hopefully in time I develop a style. My PP is all over the place lol.

It takes time, and your tastes will change over time. It's a constant development, but eventually you hit a baseline you know you like, and then you start to get that consistency.
