Ref to player ratio.

This is a question aimed primarily at field owners. At your field, what is your ref to player ratio for rec ball?

At the four fields in hawaii we normally have 1 ref on the field for rec ball (airball, hyber, speed) fields and 2 or 3 refs on the woodsball field.

Woodsball you'd need more.

But ATLEAST 1 for speedball. I'd NEVER run a speedball game without a ref. if someone's mask comes off the person who's covering their head cant be heard no matter how loud they yell, and the other players won't even notice.

We always keep 2-3 refs on woodsball, depending on how many people have reservations, while we always keep 2 refs on speedball whenever it is up.

If you read the fine print, your insurance mandates referee numbers. Mine is two for the first 15 players, and one for each addition five players. My field focuses on customer service, and safety, so I am willing to bite the bullet and have a ton of staff around. That means on a 20v20, I have 7 refs!

Some insurances will dictate number of refs for a specific type game of paintball. I know ours states 2 refs for any speedball game. Depending on what type of crowd you have, If you have upper teens/twenties players, that have ome experience and its around 15-20 players, you could do that easy enough with one ref. If you have a very novice group of younger players, you might need more than one if its 15-20 players.

Cossio,

But I read procedure for three different insurance quotes and they all mandated the same.

So field owners, how many of you have 19 referees on days where you have 100 people present? If you don't and that is what your insurance company mandates, is that a way for your insurance company to get out of paying should an injury arise?

Depends on age/experience.

One way around needing a lot of refs is to 'certify' some of your regulars who tend to be helpful for open games. For private bookings, find out if it's 20 first-time playing little kids, or a group of experienced adults.

Same rules my kids' Day Care applies! ;-)

Our insurance, via Lloyds, doesn't tell us anything about refs...

At my paintball park I have always had a min of 2 refs and after that I add a ref for every 10 players. This is my 5 paintball park since 2000 and this has always worked out great. But you have to have refs that do not just stand on the sidelines. They have to be very active in the game. I hold a ref class every couple of months to keep the refs up to date.
