Why cant I download anything?!?!?!
This has been driving me crazy. Im on Windows 7 while using Google Chrome. I used to be able to download files but now I cant. It seems to be only the bigger files. Maybe zip and rar ones only? Ive been trying to download datpiff mixtapes and the loading circle comes up but it never starts downloading. I also tried downloading some videos and the loading circle comes up but that doesnt start download as well. Anyone know what the problem is?
Edit- I also tried right click-save link as...
and that did nothing. no window asking me where to download it to popped up.

If you are not going to offer any helpful advice then don't post.
This "open windows media player" trend is old and extremely stupid.

I mean with some files (in firefox anyway) you can open with windows media player instead of permanently downloading. I don't think chrome does it though.

OP, I've seen viruses cause your problem before. You might consider running scans with MSE/Malwarebytes. Also, is there a different computer on your network that you could try downloading the same file onto? If the problem persists on two independent machines, the issue could be with your network/ISP or the website itself that is hosting the file. You may also want to try downloading the file with a wired connection if you are connected wirelessly.

Yes, I was worried of this. My Mom's computer can download these files fine.

Well at least we have the problem isolated to your computer. Is there a difference in connection type between your's and your mom's computer (wired vs wireless)? If not, I would run the scans I mentioned.

What's stupid about it ? The guy is trying to download a mixtape . Wouldn't the logical place to open a said mixtape be in windows media player. Hell if you have your macros right some people have their downloads always opened in chrome or iTunes. On my centOS install I can right click on links and say open in vlc or download to downloads . Or download and open with ect. This may have been a stretch depending on where he is with his current trouble shooting .
What are you account permissions ? What ports are blocked on your computer ? Someone could prevent incoming downloads or do the the rookie way and not let you see / have access to the download folder . Once we figure these out we can move on or eliminate this area.
Also can you download anything else . What is the site your trying to download it from ?

Windows media player is an old ST:Tech joke, and Bob is a troll.
He just got lucky that his suggestion may also have been helpful in a roundabout kinda way.

I dot get how it's a joke ?
Also what if it's not even a file to open and download it's just a link to a stream then obviously You need a player to play the stream because there's nothing to download. You guys jumped the gun on WMP .
I think it's complete **** that people still think Microsoft products are a joke these days . Sure maybe for IE5 or IE6 but if you look at IE9 they came a long way. And I think it's unfair to label windows media player as a joke alot of man hours were put into making it modern and people still give it flak because msft isn't hip or cool .

I don't mean it was a joke of a piece of software, it was a ST:Tech meme type joke. People came into every thread recommending WMP for overclocking, torrenting, gaming... all kinds of things it didn't actually do.

But windows media player can play streaming music and downloaded mixtapes no ? I don't get why it's such a ****ty suggestion ? Sure there are other players out there but CT just gave him **** and didn't even suggest an alternative like VLC or real player .
I think it's a shame the moderators encourage this Microsoft's a joke attitude . Imagine if players had the same attitude towards vanguard and they then pulled their ad money here because everyone thinks they are a running joke . (which pack to get? should have gotten a vanguard lolz, my jersey tore what brand makes heavy duty ones, get a vanguard they are a joke lol). You see my point ?

I hear what you are saying, but I don't think they are doing this right now.
If anything, they misinterpreted the post of a troll when he wasn't actually trolling this time. The mods don't usually trash MS software, but in this case it just so happened that MS was the butt of an actual joke that got out of hand at one point AND a potentially valid answer to the question.
It's kind of a funny situation.

You know I would say so about it being funny until as of until a few months ago .
I always thought Microsoft sucked rightfully so in middle school and high school . But then something changed when I was graduating I went out to an interview there which I got the job but decided to take an offer back home due to hurricane sandy (grandmother lost her house and it's a lot for my single mom to deal
With taking care of her).
But I learned a lot at MS. I was wowed with how far they came with things like IE9. I now do web development and can't wait for the day when 60% of our users will go from ie7-ie9 because I can make suck better applications with it . I was also humbled by the fact that they know that they suck in the worlds eyes there. I was interviewing with bing. And it was humbling to hear them say we know people will just never get to us vs google because we Arnt hip or cool . No matter how nice their maps are people will always just goto google because they are trendy. I asked one manager how he stays motivated knowing that even if he delivers a better product it's unlikely to be recognized and he said something great . He said even if just one person has their homepage on a Microsoft phone set to bing and uses it by accident instead of google and says "hey this isn't bad I kind of like this I think I'll keep it" , then I feel accomplished . I know it's hard to change the mass perception but at least I can do my best to change one person at a time.
It's kind of an unfair dogma Microsoft carriers with it. Graduating from a top 5 CS school there's always the well it could be worse it could be windows, or oh great now everyone can buy the windows 8 tablets that look like the windows 8 phones they dont want, or in a peer critique hearing " what's this ? Hotmail 2.0" and everyone laughs. It's trendy sure but it's also immature . I thought the moderation staff was above that here . I guess I'm wrong though :/. But then again it shows you making a ****ty product or ****ty bunch of products will always stay with customers .
On that note in done talking about this . Hopefully the OP can give us the web page he is trying to download it from
And we can figure out where he is going wrong .
