Proto Rails are great; under 300$, light, smooth shooting and great ergonomics. It was an easy choice for me.

If you consider used the pm6 is far and away the best option for the dollar. They often run under $150 stock or $200 with UL frame. One heck of a shooter even by today's standards. With an egienring you'll be getting average efficiency for a spoolie. The old shockers are other great shooter for the money. $125-$150 buys you at least a vision sft if not an nxt.

If by a lil more, $175-$200, yeah, he could.

But hanging with the high end markers really doesn't mean anything if I can take my 2k2 Mag and blast some kid with a Luxe.

Stricly new, Valken Proton is my choice.

Including used, then I'd say either a PM8 or a Quest (pm8 is newer, Quest is more efficient and simpler)

More than likely I'd go with a proton or a used dm7.

Thank good you didn't join Nation in 2012. I said the same thing in another thread, and got flamed for it.

For me an older DM fits the bill.

I get kind of tired of people making a big deal about the axe not being a spool or wanting it called a pressure controlled poppet instead of an inline poppet, etc. In reality most people think of spools in terms of their performance attributes, such as that they are typically smooth, quiet, less efficient, single-tube, etc. In the case of the axe it has most of the performance benefits of a spool, especially when an aftermarket bolt is installed.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I think of a spool, I think of something that uses a spool valve. Which the Mini/Axe simply isn't. I could care less how it shoots, if someone says they want a spool, it doesn't qualify.

Why would you care? It makes no sense to me... I have absolutely no preference on how a gun operates as long as it's smooth and quiet. Up until fairly recently the only guns that fit that bill were spools. Now, where do ethas fit? They're technically a hybrid spool/poppet. What about the new J4? It's a stacked tube spool. What about clones? While still a spool, they're a spool + valve. I mean seriously, why debate semantics?

Oh, and by the way almost all non-clapper noids are spool valves, so almost all electros are "spool controlled."

I would care because IMO, the Mini/Axe doesn't shoot like a spool. It's not as smooth (except for the DP G Series and the PE spools), and it's got a little more pop to it like the traditional poppet. I'm very much not a fan of them.

Yes, there is some blur with some markers like the Etha (which I would incidentally never recommend for any reason because it's simply an awful marker), but to me, the Mini/Axe isn't a blurry line, it's a poppet that just so happens to be smoother shooting than most (but I think Marq's are smoother shooting than Mini/Axe if set up correctly).

I had a stock engine marq7 and a sc'd closer that I just sold. I agree... stock vs stock the marqs are smoother. Add an eigenbolt and the axe is significantly quieter (clone quiet) and every bit as smooth. Stand alone, stock, I agree with your conclusion about the gun.

One other thing is that to me, the cycle feels way different than a normal poppet. On most poppets there's the abrupt pop of the valve opening and with the axe/mini it is much more discrete. It feels more like a blowforward spool than a normal poppet "snap" cycle.

The plot thickens...

Honestly, for $300 you have a large selection if you know where to look. However, keep in mind a lot of "used" markers, while a great deal financially, are beginning to age. I saw someone suggesting a PM6(proto matrix 6, I prefer the PM7 myself, the PM6 is a fatass) which if you add it up puts any PM6 you buy at about 6-7 years old.

I totally agree it doesn't cycle like a "normal" poppet.

If you want to consider used guns then def don't rule out Shockers! They are super smooth and most come with Freak barrels (most accurate barrel in my opinion).
