How much is your politician worth per year?

So, my wife and I were talking about how much politicians get paid. A little quick research showed that the President of the United States makes $400,000 per year. A member of Congress makes $174,000 per year. Meanwhile, the average household income in America, bearing in mind that many households are dual income, is just over $50,000 per year.

That got us thinking a lot about what we pay our politicians. I'd suggested that maybe they should make what the average American makes. She had, what I think, is a much better idea. Perhaps the better way to go would be to pay each politician the average income of their particular constituency. That would light a fire under them, hopefully, to improve the situations of their districts. If they're representing a cesspool, rather than making $174k per year just to fill a seat, they'd have the incentive to make their district a better place, with better wages, if for no other reason than their own benefit.

I'm sure there's no chance they'd ever put these kinds of restrictions on themselves, but it was amusing to think about, and it might be something I hand off to my friendly neighborhood Congressman.

nancy pelosi thinks pay cuts to them would undermine the "dignity" to their jobs.lol

I would support a bill that says if congress's approval rating isn't above a certain percent, their pay is 0 til it goes up.

All things considered I don't think that's an unreasonable salary for the POTUS.

I really like the idea of linking congress' salary to the average wage of their constituency in some way though. On an aside, as someone who has lived in Wisconsin and DC I would suggest some small base pay to cover DC living costs (I believe they get this already) then link anything additional to their constituency's average pay.

This is a stupid idea that undermines the purpose of being a Republic.

A reasonable per diem doesn't seem out of line. I think you're right, too, I believe they draw that now, in addition to their salary.

Each office has a budget for paying staff, with the money coming from "appropriated funds". So, from our tax dollars.

14. Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.)
$19.42 million
McCaskill watched her net worth grow in 2007, increasing more than 24 percent over her estimated $15.66 million total in 2006.
Among McCaskill’s major assets: approximately 270 limited partnerships in affordable housing real estate and a handful of “enterprise trust investment funds” held by her husband that showed a combined increase of approximately $2.7 million in value from last year.
Her spouse purchased a Kansas City, Mo., housing bond listed in the “over $1 million” category.
The Senator’s husband also identified a loan of at least $1 million, the only liability listed by the couple, from Enterprise Bank.
She also has homes in Detroit, misc properties, and some firms in Michigan. She also votes for anything that grants subsidies to her husband.

About as corrupt as they come. But she somehow managed to go up against Akin who was legitimately stupid.

The problem isn't that they make $174k, it's that they're allowed to have earnings outside of their political position. It only corrupts.

I'd be curious to know how much she lost when the housing market collapsed.

I think lobbying is far worse. At least she's invested in the health of the housing market.

So they get paid significantly more than their salary?

That is what I am trying to pull out of the quagmire.

Yep. They've got their "base salary", plus per diem, plus funding for their staffs, and likely other discretionary funds as well. So, that listed base salary really is the tip of the iceberg.

Hell, if you took into consideration what it costs the taxpayers to fund the President's operation, we'd probably all revolt.

No, that money goes straight to the staffers.

At least it's only x1, instead of x100+

the leader of the free world only makes $400,000?

Since most elected officials have to hire and staff their offices themselves, I have no problem with the $100k plus salaries. It doesn't seem nearly as ludicrous as what can pass as fair in the free market.

As a salary, but he pays for essentially nothing during that time in office.

Their staff are paid for out of additional funds allocated to each office.

I read in our newspaper yesterday that someone wrote a book about how much money the us taxpayers pay for the presidents expenses it was something like 1.4 billion. mostly on travel I think he has traveled more places than any other president before. Has a million dollar misc expenses account.
