1st attempt at custom dyeing a Spire - Dyed Spire

I am very happy with the way it turned out for my first attempt. The only thing that I am not happy with is the type of plastic used in the Spire shell. In the top half, you can see little specs in the plastic that dyed darker than the surrounding. The bottom came out perfect. I suggest using the tray like I did to practice your first attempt before moving to the main shell. Keep in mind, there are some pieces that won't take the dye, like in between the little virtue symbol due to glue I imagine. All in all, I am very pleased and love how it matches my purple Dura.

These are the small fleks in the plastic that dyed darker. Not a huge deal, but I have OCD with little things like this.

When I was putting it together, I realized I should have dyed the buttons as well. Turned out pretty good since I did this while I was camping in my motorhome.

Next one will be even better!

awesome work!
had similar results with my spire shell. great overall but there were some small parts where the dye didn't take as much as the rest

Test it out on the tray first! If you use vinyl stickers, don't take them off until you are done dyeing the hopper. Any sticky reside will not allow the dye to get in the plastic.

If your doing multiple layers of dye (lighter to darker) count out loud to yourself while its in the boiling dye and be consistent with the bottom and top halves. Most of my layers were only 8-10 seconds in the dye.

Most of the people thought it was suppossed to look like that. I was hoping it would look like the bottom did. I am not complaining, but I am a attention to detail kind of guy.

Since you experienced the same thing, I wonder if it's just the way the plastic on the top shell reacts to dye.

Did you remove or cover the virtue logos(small and big one) before dying?

No, I left the logos on the little logo is glued and the big flat metal sticker would get bent up if you tried to remove it. The orange plastic stripe around the middle comes off when you pull the halves apart.

I don't know if the top shell is the problem.
I was looking at this pic and I noticed the same defect that yours have but in the lower shell.

How did you take apart the inside part of the hopper? (the middle part where the motor batteries, etc are)

I dyed mine today, will post pics later on tonight. But I didn't dyed the inside part.
