I can believe that it is household income given how poor most of the state is, especially among some groups of people. That's said, just because it is the median household income I wouldn't consider it middle class.
In my experience you had a lot of poor people, a few who did ok and a small group of people who made really good money. The majority were poor though so that definitely skews the numbers downward.

All depends on how you would define middle class. I'm with Vin, I don't think median income is an accurate definition.

My wife and I make a fair amount over 100 and are pretty comfortable, but our savings isn't as much as it could be. We're working on it now.
