I've doubled up on gear so I can bring a certain someone who wants to try out paintball, but I've never used vests myself so I have no idea which ones to look at.

You want a hard vest not a soft one like PE our dye. Soft pads still leave welts but hard pads will make you not feel a thing. Yeah they don't have side pads but its a toss up
