So Cal Limited Paint Tournament Event
Hi guys,
*Please keep in mind that this is just an idea and none of the decisions are final or have been finalized.
We are gauging interest in a LIMITED PAINT tournament.
For old school players, you will most likely remember the Great Western Series. Something similar to that.
---------------------
Objective: To allow newer players to participate in a tournament style format while keeping the practice and event costs down.
Format: Limited paint 300-500 Rounds per player (5 people). Paint to be able to be distributed to the players before match starts. Round Robin. Center Flag. NO COACHING.
Example: If paint count per player is 400 allowable, 2,000 rounds total for that team per match. Players can re- distribute as they wish to the 5 players on the field. Front player can go on with 200 and give the back player an additional 200.
Number of players: 5 Man - Roster up to 7.
Location: Local Fields
Registration System: APPA?
Who is it for?
Newer players. D4,D3 Combined. Possible 1 D2 player allowed per team.
Costs: TBD ($50-$75 per person) to cover costs and setup a prize structure.
Number of Events: TBD. No contact has been made with any of the fields regarding locations.
---------------------------
** Suggestions welcome **

I like this A LOT!
I say Two Pods per player ( 140 round ones ) then they can distribute them on the field any way they want.
APPA for sure and they must have a valid ID
D4 and D3

2 - 140 Pods per player would make the match startup process run alot smoother! Great idea! I was originally thinking of just weight the paint on an electronic scale. =/

100 point. Plenty of Race formats. Possible with 8 prelims games per team, with additional games for people moving onto semi and finals.

lowers costs will attract new players. create a D5 division for them.
also make sure you dont get players who used to be D2/D3...took an extended break, their ranking fell off APPA, and now they sandbag the D5 division.

I remember limited paint as 50 rounds per game! I still like it, but fewer paint would still be better!

If anyone is also interested, there's an event by mcarterbrown forums that's going to be happening but not as a tourney, it's already like 50+ or something. Here's a link, not to hijack the thread or anything.

Limited paint - 2 pods. I'm with that!!!
APPA - Great, so the sandbaggers, won't rape the newer tourney players, this way they can get some experience and get hook onto playing more lower division tournaments.
Peace-

This is a great idea Glen. It will allow some of the newer teams, that cannot afford the high cost of tournament fees combined with the paint bill, to get their feet wet.
I really hope teams see the value and growth potential in something like this.

this is a great idea!
this would get the younger kids and newer players into the sport. Most people are pretty tight on money right now and if a kid is wantign to play and the cost has dropped, such as this is suggesting, then the parents may fork over the money quicker.
Make this a semi tournament...ramping might be a bit much esp for newer players.
Get the new players actaully engaged in running the tournament. Offer them the chance to "shadow" the refs and LEARN about the game play and calls.
use this idea as a teaching/coaching event.
the more experienced D5/D4/D3 players invovled should try and mentor the new blood.
DANG GREAT IDEA!!!

This is definitely an issue. We might want to not use APPA at all and use a "Hey buddy, you are really good. You might want to try another event." Most people know all the old school ballers. Realistically, some people need to be ranked D4 even after 5 years of play and should be allowed to play. Some people need to move up after 3 months.

Semi but I am sure pump players can and will get involved.

Probably not use APPA at all other than a preliminary check. 2 or 3 pods sounds about right. People still want to roll their water hose.

Sandbaggers still exist but APPA seems to be the best way to start.

I was hoping that it can get a lot of new players feet wet. Customers are more intimidated about the current structure of events. Do not see much new blood in the local scene. Hopefully, this could be a vehicle that allows them to check it out without too much cost or grief. I figure it will help other leagues as it will be an avenue of speedball player growth.

I hope this will initiate growth for events and yes money is tight for people. Having Upper divisional teams mentor is a great idea!

Field is undecided if it happens. Im sure we will talk to a few if it goes further than just discussions.
Regarding Sandbaggers:
I think the best way to approach this is to randomly choose winners for the day regarding prizes to eliminate the need for sandbagging. Also, I was thinking of just asking people to not choose other players that are knowingly playing below their skill level. (APPA will not fix this). Ultimately the players should ask them to NOT PLAY. Instead of getting upset, players should take it as a compliment when asked to NOT PLAY that their skill level is greater than what this event was intended for.
