If you have any confidence in your ability to use google docs, buy a chromebook. http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/chromebook

they are still small, and limited enough you wont spend all class playing games.
Actually went with this laptop when school started and it's working me great ever since.
The only downside was how internet based it was, but you can still access all your documents on googledocs while being offline.
Nice computer. Boots up fast, really quiet. Doesn't heat up at all.
Does exactly what I want it to do.

as an owner of both a tablet and a "high end" netbook, get the netbook.
I just got the Acer 725 and its super nice. 4.5 hr battery life, 11" HD screen, runs all the necessary basic programs (office, VLC, etc), look around on Amazon for a used one to save big money.

edit- go for something with an AMD C-60 or 70 processor

I used an Asus Transformer TF101 tablet my first semester for note taking. The included note taking app is pretty cool and you have the option of inputting notes via the dock/keyboard or through the touchscreen. The tablet/dock combo can be found on eBay for ~$230.

I would steer clear of netbooks. You can usually find better specs in a small laptop in the same price range.

I think if all you want to do is take notes, a tablet is what you're going to want. Most well-know tablets are plenty fast for word processing, internet browsing, other basic tasks. You'll also likely get better battery life. The only downside is that you can't install Windows programs. Most tablets will be able to view and edit office documents either out of the box or via an app, however.

If all you are going to do on it is take notes I'd just get a pad and an app for writing.. Easier to drag around.

For just note taking why not look into some cheap used one? Any laptop made in the last 8 years+ can do this while still being able to browse internet. Worst off if you don't like it you could probably resell it for nearly the same price you paid.

A note taking app with no keyboard?

If you for some reason you want to spend a bit of money and you have some tech experience you can buy a netbook and buy a touchscreen conversion kit for ~$100, this way you have the keyboard and then you can write on the screen for formulas and whatnot. Or you can get one of those new winodws laptops with the touchscreen that spins. Or get any computer you please and attach one of those Bamboo notetaking pads.

Not so sure. I would probably mess around too much with a tablet? That's just my initial thought.
